Correction, for the mx6/626, 88-89 turbo had 195/60/15 stock tire size, 90-92 turbo had 205/60/15 (mostly, I believe a few had 195/60/15). You cannot generalize all models based on your probe. Keep in mind this is a mx6/626 site, not probetalk.
In general, I recommend the following for the 1st gen MX6 (88-92).
15": 195/60/15 on 88-89, 205/60/15 on 90-92
16": 205/50/16 with 42mm or less offset.
17": 215/45/17 with 42mm or less offset. 17x7" worked on my '91 GT, but it was very close.
I agree that much more offset than 42mm and you'll likely run into trouble. 18" will certainly fit with the right tire and rim size, I'm just not positive which one.
It should be made clear that the 90-92s have slightly more room for tire in the back due to struts that allow more clearance. This has been confirmed by Manifest.
It should also be made clear that the larger the diameter rims you put on your car, the rougher the ride will be due to decreased tire sidewall height. I thought my 17"s were OK, but the ride definitely got rougher when upgrading from the stock 205/60/15. In retrospect I would have probably gone with 16s.
