Yes turbo's can be taken from small diesel trucks or trackter engines but if you do make sure it has an internal wastegate. Most diesels won't have internal wastegates. Or you could use an external wastegate setup with one of these turbo's (more fabrication work though).
For a turbo upgrade look at nissan stuff like skylines, silvias, 180sx (RB20DET's), etc.
I'm sure you know this but make sure you rebuild the turbo or have it checked before fitting it. You don't want to have compressor wheel bits and pieces going through your intake or have a bearing falure in the turbo etc....
