Start from the beginning. Was the cam gear installed with the head or did you change it over? The pin should be at the 12oclock position? Then the gear place on number 1 so the pin is below the number one. It really does not matter wear the pin is now just make sure it is below number 1. To tighten or loosen there is a hole to the right of gear where you place a flat screw driver through and it will lock the gear while you tighten it. Sounds like it is not in time.

Did you remove the bottom cover to verify the crank was set correctly. I remember someone posting if they had to remove the bottom cover. The cover does has the timing marks but I do not think you would be able to tell if it was off by a tooth.
