the nissan box isnt a bad box craig. its the same basic box found in all 5 speed silvias and all na 2wd skylines and the turbo 2l skylines. its comparable to the smaller mazda rwd box for weight and size, but its got a steel bearing plate and i suspect wider gears. they come with as much as 250hp hanging from them.
its possible that you have the larger nissan box, if so, thats the same as the gtr/gts25t in guts (but not ratios) and is stronger than the mazda turbo box like mine.
if you arent going to turbo the kl, then any of the nissan or mazda rwd boxs will be ok. if you are going to turbo it, steer clear of the smaller mazda one.
there is nothing to stop you engineering your own starter mount for normal mode operation at the same time as whatever adapter plate you make. i personally hate the idea of spacing the flywheel away from the crank. especially if you are front engine rwd and value the use of your legs.
i'd put my box choice down to what sort of ratios i wanted. if ute ratios were ok or good, i'd stick nissan. if they are less than preferable, you could swap in skyline gears, or go mazda or even toyota w5x series.
hope thats useful for you :-)
fred.
ps, i just love that mx5. i found it the other day after searching for kl rwd and thinking about a really light car (300kg lighter than the mx5) that would take the kl and make good use of it. i can get a klze cheap as chips in nz because of their prevalence in all the ugly poorly made mazda luxury sedans that no one maintains and are constantly falling of the road.
