If STS (thats the stock class right?) allows semi slicks, go find a place that sells used semi slicks and go for it. Get an extra set of rims to put them on, lighter the better, but light weight = more money, so whatever your budget allows.
If it doesnt allow semis, a good set of street tyres will still make a large difference.

Actually STS is not a stock class, but even the stock classes allow an R-compound tire (which I believe would be a "semi" slick as you referred to it). I currently run on AVON'S full on slick that is heat cycled and specifically for autox. It is by far the best slick I've ever ran my miata on and unforuntately they are discontinuing it! The slick is/was very affordable @ $120 a tire.
As for my husband's '6, I would like for him to run atleast a season on good street tires so he can really learn how to "work" the car. Slicks tend to compensate for an inexperienced driver whereas street tires give better "feedback" to the driver. I waited a little over a season to switch to slicks, and boy did that make the world of difference!
