Many filters on the market out there.
Alot of the time it's got alot to do with both how they car kept in terms of condition - mounted and how they are positoned will depend on if they last or don't - or even give any perofrmance benifit.
For example
I like the Uni filter RAM pod. but mounting one to make it work not so.
It fiilters quite well when oiled up right and having used many oil filters in off road and alot of dirt bikes. - They do worked better then the cotton or simialr types treated.
Simonata ? SP - make good airfilters in terms of prize.
K&N still make possibly the best fit air filters
and oyu can't pass there panel - end of story the panel is the king with them.
And the panel when setup right - especially if the car had good iar box to begin with - mazda air boxes most are desgiend in the right way - straight air flow - largest surface. 2nd gen I think does but 1st gen is definate one .
IMO if it's not plain paper or original (out of production) - Cottom /single layer paper backed filter.
it's got ot be an oil type be it foam or cotton. End of the day from there on it's all about the maintance.
