Painting the door insert

I thought about reupholstering the door inserts, but a freind spray painted his head liner, so i thought i would give it a shot. First off, you need the spray paint. I used Dupli-color vinyl and fibric paint.

Getting the door panel off isnt that hard. There is a screw inside the pull handle, on the door handle, and the bottom left of the panel. There also is a clip inside the window knob. that one can be a bit tricky to get out. I pry it out with a flat screwdriver. MAKE SURE to pull the snaps out from the bottom, or the sides of the panel. If you pull from the middle, than the door panel will split.

Once you get the panel off, you can turn it around and see a bunch of metal tabs that hold the insert in place. If you pry those out, the insert comes right out.

Once you get that out, get all the dust off (you could wash it but i didnt).
make note that mazda has 2 different types of inserts. they arent interchangable. I got one from the junkyard to paint, and it didnt fit. One has a metal backing, the other is a cardboard backing.

The paint is extremely quick to dry. I found that if you turn the nozzle control to the horizontal position, you dont get ugly lines in the panel.

All thats left now, is to put everything back in. The insert doesnt go back in as easy as it comes out. Make sure all the tabs are straight before you try to put it in. It also helps to have a small screw driver guide them in from the back.

And the finished product.

My next goal is to do something with the ugly carpet on the bottom, but I have found that the glue they use to hold it on is like no other.

Thats as far as Ive gotten, probably 45 minutes spent trying to get off the carpet.
