Outside door handles not working

I've had this happen on both doors of my my MX6, and heard of many other having this same problem. Many have just replaced the handle assembly with old or news ones, but the fix is actually very simple.

The trickiest part is removing the handle assembly. After removing the door panel and weather barrier, roll the window up to access the back of the handle. There are two actuating rods to disconnect. The first rod(shown in top pic) is threaded and connected to the opening lever. There's a plastic peice clipped over the threads. (you should mark it's position before removing, but it's not critical) The second(not shown) is the lock lever, unclip the plastic fastener from the rod and swing it away, so you can pull the rod out of it. Then remove the lock cylinder with a small thin screwdriver by undoing the clip that wraps around it and holds it in the handle assembly. Then two nuts and it's out.

It's really simple at this point. Dig through the kitchen drawer, or that coffee can in the garage, and find an appropriate self-tapping screw(and washer if needed) Size up a drill bit for it. Use a punch to mark the center so the bit stays centered and drill. (middle pic)

Tighten the screw into place and you're set! (bottom pic) I know there's a spring mounted behind the opening lever. I didn't replace it. It just didn't seem to fit right, and doesn't seem to be needed. I haven't had any problems with either door ever since. The only trick to reassembly is the lock cylinder. After installing the assembly into the door, and hand tightening the nuts, install the retaining clip into place on the assembly, THEN insert the cylinder, it will snap into place, and won't leave you cursing.

Hope all this helps!!

this is the only one in body that i see. for further info mx6 and 626 handles are not interchangeable, although the bolt pattern is the same the placement of the rods and lock cylinder size are different. (found that out the hardway today)
