Rims Confuse Me

God damnit, I hate being a n00b at all this [shizzle], but I don't understand how to tell what rims will fit my car. I understand like 15's, and 16's and measurments like that, but what about the width? How do you know if it will fit or not, and does it really make any difference? Also, bolt patterns, I understand lug #'s, but not all 5 lug rims will fit all 5 lug cars, right? How do you figure that out? And I also heard that rear wheel drive rims will not fit front wheel drive cars and vice versa. And don't you want to keep the overall size of tires and rims as close to stock as possible, like if you get 17's, and you had stock 15's, you want your tires to be 2 inches thinner so you dont have to re-adjust your speedometer? Damnit I'm so confused.

oh, btw, if you know a sweet set of relatively cheap 17" rims that will fit my 91 626 lx with no hassle (i would need tires to) send me a link or pm or something, and perhaps save some trouble. hehe

Our rims are 5x114.3 or 5x4.5 whichever way you wanna look at them. This means a lot of 5 bolt wheels will fit (Eclipses, Mustangs, a lot of Mazdas). The thing that gets us into trouble is the offset of the wheels and how close the inner comes to rubbing with our struts in the front and rear.

I'ts a piece of cake to bake a pretty cake, if the way is hazy

rets.. dont let it get to you. tires can be wicked confusing, but like dyoel said there are different "bolt patterns" that are for different cars.. im currently running a set of 17" Motegi Mr7 wheels with a +40 offset and 205/40/r17 tires

now lets break down what i just said

17" wheels - obvious
+40 offset - the distance from the face of the wheel that the hub will contact the wheel
205/40/r17

the 205 is thw width of the tire, measured from inside sidewall to outside sidewall.

the 40 is a percentage of the 205. this meant that a tires that is a 195/40/17 will be thinner from tread to wheel (height of the rubber around the wheel) then a 205/40/17 is

and the R17 is the rim size denotation

hope this helps a little bit

H=130mph
V=149mph
W=168mph
y=186mph
zr>149mph

(got these numbers from my friend's super street, if they're wrong yell at them i haven't bothered looking into it.)

offset a.k.a. ET (einpress tiefe) - distance between the hub/rim contact point and the center line of the rim. "+" and "-" in front of the value shows if the hub/rim contact point is on the inner or outer side of the rim center line. The value will tell how deep the wheel sits in the wheel well.
I think that's what you were saying AdderMk2?

I have 17x7s as well with 215/45/17 tires and no problems. The different tire manufacturers specify what width of wheel you can put their tires on - this info is usually found on their website or by talking to your tire rep (i.e. tirerack).

I think the main problem is the offset. The rear struts are only about an inch from the stock wheel/tire. Hey MX6PWR are you running the 16" RX7 twin Turbo wheels?

Does anyone know if the Honda 16" x 6 1/2" Rims with 205/50 16 will work okay on my 1st Gen 6. I put one on the front and it seemed to clear fine, the back was tight but cleared with only 1/4" clearance between the strut.

vyeguy - I'm running 17x7.5 and i dont have any problems, the tires in the back are extremely close to rubbing but it hasnt at all. I have a stock suspension setup so i'm not sure if it'll work with an aftermarket setup, though i would think it will.
