OK, now any of you from New England may have heard of Town Fair Tire www.townfairtire.com ... well... i work there and i am the 3rd ranked wheel salesman in Region 5 (the RI/east CT area) I will be editing this post tomorrow when i come home from work. Right now all I can refer to is the stock PGT size! now then.. on to the pain
Stock size, even according to the sticker in my passenger side door reads 205/60VR15 Mind you i also do drive a Probe. Upgraded Sizes!!!!!!!!!! A +45 offset is the furthest that you can go on our cars, especially with a 7.5" wheel. Most Konig wheels come with a +45 offset ( damn hondas ) DO NOT ASK IF 3g RX7 wheels will fit. The offsert on the wheels is too high and will rub very hard against the rear struts. I never recomment spaces, they are not only HACK, but unsafe! i will not sell them at work, and i will not recommend them here. Proper wheel fitment dictates ATLEAST 6 turns of a lug nut for proper torque yeild on the studs. A +35 offset would be the lowest i would recommend going, a lower offset like this will set the wheels out further, although increasing handling, it will make your car look like the mexican civic with the daytons that stick 2 feet out of the wheel well, not to mention, can cause your tires to rub on the fender in a hard turn. Always remember, the wider the wheel, the more backspacing you will need to make it fit. Therefore... a 17x8" wheel will fit fine with a +35 offset, but will more then likely rub with a +45 offset. With this in mind, we will move on!
Of course, alterations to the ride height of the vehicle will change the fitment of a tire... so keep then in mind! Last edited by AdderMk2 : 9-12-05 at 0:12. Reason: found a typo 215/45/17 not 225/45r17 |

In general, I recommend the following for the 1st gen MX6 (88-92). 15": 195/60/15 on 88-89, 205/60/15 on 90-92 16": 205/50/16 with 42mm or less offset. 17": 215/45/17 with 42mm or less offset. 17x7" worked on my '91 GT, but it was very close. I agree that much more offset than 42mm and you'll likely run into trouble. 18" will certainly fit with the right tire and rim size, I'm just not positive which one. It should be made clear that the 90-92s have slightly more room for tire in the back due to struts that allow more clearance. This has been confirmed by Manifest. It should also be made clear that the larger the diameter rims you put on your car, the rougher the ride will be due to decreased tire sidewall height. I thought my 17"s were OK, but the ride definitely got rougher when upgrading from the stock 205/60/15. In retrospect I would have probably gone with 16s. Last edited by magik8 : 9-19-06 at 22:37. I do agree that slip on wheel spacers are kinda hack, but I think unsafe is going a little too far. If done correctly (longer heavier duty studs) I think slip on spacers would be okay but personally I will only use (and do use) the bolt on spacers that let you have the full stud thread for a true torque. Eibach had done tons of trial and research before releasing their performance spacers, so I trust that they are street and track safe. |

When done correctly, almost nothing is a hack:http://www.mx6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=73189 (Fun with RX7 rims)
This doesn't apply to 99% of customers you probably see in your line of business Adder. To reiterate what Magik8 said, the stock size on the 88-89's is 195/60-15 for the GT's and some LX/DX...mostly DX I believe? got 185/70-14. I can post a page from the shop manual if you'd like? |

Id also like to add another level of confusion to this.
Tires. The truth is tire makers do not conform to an agreed upon standard for how to measure their tires. 205mm is not always 205mm ( a falken Azenis 205/50/15 measures as wide as a BFG KD 225/50/15, Kumhos 225/50/16 MX measures wider than many 235s and as wide as some 245 tires on the same width wheel). The tire could be a rounded profile, or have very square shoulders. This will affect clearance to struts and fenders. It would be good to say that witin a manufacturers line there is consistency but even this isnt completely true. Using Falken again as an example, their 215 tire is only marginally wider than thier 205 tire. This is for a specific application(autocross) but some of this is applicable to others as well. I run my clearances very tight, stuffing as much tire as I can between the strut body and the fender. A change in tire manufacturer can affect the clearance one has when running tollerences this tight. Spacers have become a necessity as this is a more practical means of changing spacing/offset of wheels than buying new wheels with the "correct" offset. I would suggest to anyone who is sizing a wheel/tire combo that is on the fringes to check the manufacturers sites(or tire rack) and check listings for tread width and section width(and what wheel width the measuements were taken from). That will help to reduce the chance of clearance issues. EDIT:speling Gavin Last edited by gavin : 7-21-05 at 18:50. |

Miata Tire Size Calculator
I figured I'd post this and title it appropriately for future searches. It's been on plenty of times but I had to dig around before I found it:

hey guys I know im reviving and old thread and ive done a search anyhows..IM getting some rims rather cheaply off a mate problem is they are way too big the front are 18x8 and rears are 18x9 now I know if I roll (flare my gaurds) the 18x8's will fit but what about the 18x9's? IM driving a tx5 so 4ws is not a concern. Any ideas?? Ohh jsut a note the rims are comign off a 1999 model 200sx.. Oh also theres 5 rims 3 are 8's 2 are 9's so if 8's will fit alround might try find a 2nd hand joint that will swap 2 9's for 1 8
