Glossy door trimmings??

To Mr MX6, or anyone out there who have painted their door trimmings:

I just recently painted my trimmings, but i can't seem to get the glossy look and smooth texture of the body paint. And when I try to use wax on them, the wax sticks and doesn't come off!! What do they do professionally to the factory/aftermarket paint jobs that make them shine and smooth to the touch?? Clear coats would make it shine, just slightly, but it doesn't feel smooth at all and wax still sticks.

Any advice? Pls.

I am assuming you are talking about your exterior door moldings?
Try sanding down where you painted between coats of paint. DO the same with the clear coat and sand that down until its smooth.
Post some pics too!!!

I am talking about the black plastic trimming that runs horizontal all the way around the car.

Sanding between coats? Wouldn't that just scratch off the paint I just sprayed on?

wet sand with fine grit sand paper. I would sand with 400 grit wet sanding paper. You just keep dumping water over the area your sanding. dry it off and paint again until its smooth, then put a couple coats of clear on it. Beware, dont make the paint too thick...it is known to chip and crack off of mouldings.

thanks for all the advice guys. I will give wet sanding a go. Probably end up messy since I've never done this before. More posts when I am done.

Did you guys use shoe polish over the original black trim or the new painted trim?

Black shoe polish is used if yo want to keep the moldings the original black colour. Since you are painting them to match your car, lets say its red, then obviously you do not want to put black polish on what you want to be red.
