Reply from Turbo City - sound right?

Does this sound right to you guys? Seems high. Also, their reply regarding the T-bird wheel doesn't seem right either.

Cost to rebuild your stock turbo is $303.92 plus s/h, sorry but I do not have any upgrades for your turbo.

I have a IHI RHB5-VJ11 from a 1989 Mazda MX-6 GT. I need it rebuilt. How much would you charge for this service? Also - I was wondering if you would be able to upgrade the compressor side to VJ-17. If so, how much would that cost?

Nope, that is exactly what it says in their catalogue. The rebuild kit itself is $130, balancing the shaft and wheel is $35, the rest is shop cost-disassembly, balancing, possible new parts like those pesky 8mm bolts in the center cartridge that usually strip, reassembling, testing, packaging, etc etc etc.

Last time I rebuilt my turbo, I was in and out of there in an hour (it's great living driving distance from them )

I had rebuilt my turbo originally and took in a center cartridge for cleaning, along with a shaft and wheel for balancing. I bought a rebuild kit while I was there, took all of the parts home and assembled. The oil fitting wouldnt fit, along with the banjo bolts for coolant. I got a message on my phone while I was assembling that my center cartridge was swapped for a T Bird center cartridge by accident (the fittings on T Birds are standard while the VJ11 is metric) we both realized at the same time and I drove up there againt the next day. This time my turbo was fully assembled by them at no additional charge.

Great company to deal with

I called Turbo City last month and they quoted me $220 to rebuild my T3/T4. That price you got quoted on seems a little high.

ts-t4's are alot more basic and general then the IHI unit. plus garrett parts are quite a bit cheaper.

You're comparing apples vs oranges cenatix. If you asked me how much rebuilding a T3/T4 costs, I could tell you the same thing as it says the same price in their catalogue.

OK, so the price is "right".

What about their claim about "no upgrades"? I thought they knew about the T-bird. I even specified the VJ-17 in the question. Any ideas?

Maybe they don't have a VJ17 in the shop currently. If you could track down a t bird compressor housing and wheel and send it in, they would gladly put it together for you.

pssst- I have one for sale

Pick up the phone and call them. Communication is more specific than e-mail (quicker too).

FYI- you'll also have to modify the stock wastegate bracket, the holes don't line up with the compressor housing and leave it in the stock location. It's only a matter of rotating the compressor housing untill it's the same as the VJ11 and drilling a small hole for the bolt.
