but we are still in the "forced induction" thread none the less and I am saying that 2.25 isnt enough for the turbo car. 2.25 is enought for a NA. you are correct there

I just skimmed through this quick, and thought I should add to this, as i've gone through a bunch of exhausts on my car, getting one that I like.
Right now, I have a Hybrid (T-bird), with a full 3" downpipe from the turbo, a 3" cat, and a 3" magnaflow muffler.
I personally liked it better without the magnaflow.
It was not loud (compared to my 5.0L with flowmasters)
Or, even compared to my winter beater mx6 with stock turbo and downpipe, 2.5" crushed exhaust, cat, and polished up ricer boy fat can muffler! (ractive maybe)?
I hated that car, it was load as can be, and, well, quite annoying!
I took the muffler off, swaped it for a chrysler minivan resonator, and it was a bit better.

All that being said, the magnaflow gives it a nice deep tone still, but too quite for what I want..
I think next year I may try a 40 series flowmaster.

Have you seen how restrictive the factory exhaust elbow is on the downpipe on the turbo???

Theres no way that thing flows more than a 2.25" straight pipe

sxemx6, i had 2.25 straight pipe on my 89pgt and it in no way spooled as hard as my 3" side exit. you can blow more air faster though a 1" straw then a 2 foot straw.

yea, but if you took 1", and steped it up to 100", you still have to try and blow through an inch......

Thats what I was getting at. That and amybe it wil flow a bit more than 2.25, but i'd doubt if the stoch cast dump would do a whole lot more than that

yes, I agree the stock 02 housing on them is a bottleneck, however 3" exhaust will hands down see better boost response than a 2.25" exhaust.

blow through a full straw, see how hard it is, cut a 1/2 piece from that straw tape it to a garden hose and see how much easier that is.

also, by your theory exhaust that is anybigger than the exit for the exhaust side on a turbo is a waste.

Yes, I understand what your getting at, my point was though that 2.25 exhaust is, not great, but it will work on a turbo car. (factory isn't much bigger)
On a Factory N/A 4 cyl, anything bigger than that is a waste of power, unless your after that honda ricey fart can sound......
then its cool!!

I vote for some 5" pipe off a greyhoud for that!!

Bottom line is that 2.25 is more than enough for a 2.2L engine regardless of it being naturally aspirated or turbo. Hell if you want to get technical, there isn't a need for 3" piping unless you're close to 600+ hp.

All engines regardless of being naturally aspirated, supercharged, turbocharged have a maximum CFM potential based on rpm and engine displacement:

Our 2.2 barely see's 230 CFM at 6,000 rpm. Based on gas law and thermal dynamics, 99% of piping that you see on "tuners" cars is not needed.

As said, the demand for 3" piping isn't until upwards of 600+ HP:

it does have a lot of hp yet... but i will be modding it quick enough i dont wana put 2 exhausts a year on it

I did the deed yesterday. I'm running no muffler right now...and it's quieter overall, than with my magnaflow. Afterfire's are louder of course, but that's about it.

Really?

Mind you that if you had done a backpressure test at the elbow, through the o2 sensor bung hole you would have noticed it has 0psi of backpressure.

at idle, or full onset of boost?
