Gas Light Problem?

i have an 89mx6 gt i am about empty i think im getting 170 to the tank if that. My car has been on E all day but the light hasnt come on yet. I was wondering if the light went out or sending unit. Someone have an idea. THANKS

Pull the dash out and see if the light works.


If so, then thats your problem. If not, then its a gauge or sender problem.



No shortcuts here other than doing some work.

most likely the light. I had to replace mine not too long ago.

1991 lxt

you dont HAVE to pull the whole dash. im pretty sure there a connector you can jump in the rear under the seat.

89 GT 4WS/Megasquirt/FE3/Needs harnesses and fluids.

i pulled the trim to get to the speedo i unscrewed the speedo and it would only come out a lil bit i couldnt even undo the plug in the back.

Much much easier to just pull the rear seat and work with the connectors there. The fuel light is on a completely separate circuit from the gauge.

below is wiring diagram, seems to indicate that the wire you're looking for is white with red stripe ("W/R", lower left corner). Find that wire at the pump harness, ground it, turn key to ON, and you should see FUEL light on in dash.

If you have trouble taking the gauge cluster out like i did you might have to do what i did. I took the lower part of the dash and the lower airduct out (which is simple to do) which gave me just enough room to squeeze my hands up there and unplug the 2 connectors and speedo cable.

its probably the sender/float. mine does the same thing, i roughly know what i get per tank, but this can vary due to increase/decrease (yeah right!) in fuel prices..

Aiming for the big 200...
89 626 turbo, rebuilt F2T,woo chip,hks ssqv,highflowed T3 ball bearing steel wheel 450hp rated turbo, oil drain straight to sump,3inch stainless dump to 3inch system,fmic,pod, braided oil and water lines, speedflow fittings, 17s,smoked taillights.....next up: Full Respray!
