All turbochargers do that regardless of being "off boost". It's cast iron and it heats up. I would still check my timing and cat if I were you though.

I was gonna say that it sounded pretty normal, but I guess thats settled. I would suggest, however, that if you dont have one, you get yourself a turbo timmer, and set it up to a 1 min or so cool time. It should save yourself a lot of hassle later.

injectors ok?
how is the fuel mileage? any bad smells, maybe injector is bad and pouring raw fuel through, this is main reason cat's burn out prematurely. i have seen a product that is a fuel additive advertised as a catalytic convertor cleaner, hope these ideas help, hate to see somebody change the cat only to ruin it again by not fixing the root problem...

hahaha i've done that before. Turned out I had my timing to advanced. Those cat cleaners (aka Sea Foam) won't fix your problem though. If your cat is clogged then there is nothing you can do really but replace it. If it's a rich problem the catalyst will just heat up so much that it will melt, thus clogging your cat. Same thing if it's a timing problem. If your cat is clogged you'll know it. It's an unmistakable feeling and sound. One day you'll be driving and it'll go pop and you'll have your power back. Sounds like a timing issue to me though. How's your exhaust smell?

I think this is pretty normal for turbos. every car iv had that was boosted has done the same thing. And I dont know a whole lot but id say your running a little lean to create this kind of heat if your not pushing crazy boost. Also invest in a turbo timer or you will get lots of built up burnt oil.
