I have a 92 ford probe gt 2.2 turbo and i need to know what internals are in the motor. Are the pistons forged (i assume they are) and are the connecting rods forged. I have plans for the motor but i need to know what is in the motor and how much boost can the motor take. Also how much hp can the 5 speed trannsmission take.
Nothing in the F2T is forged. The pistons are hyperutectic (prob spelled wrong) cast AL.
The engine is strong though, pretty much stronger than the head can flow and definitely stronger than the trans.
As for the transmission, you can break one on a stock turbo - Ridiculous tq spike from the small turbo + hard enough driving. If your tq/power comes on a bit smoother it can hold a decent amount.
*edit* - rods are forged, see page 2...

'96 accord beater - $500 + $500 in parts.

So if eventually i get 15 lbs of boost will the stock motor take it?
the stock motor can easily handle 15 psi on a much larger turbo if the proper tuning is done. hell, with the right tuning, it could handle alot more. but it all comes down to the tuning. dont even worry about the motor yet.
They're not forged, I was just looking at a set the other day.
They are however, just as beefy as 1G DSM rods, when compared side-by-side. I know this isn't exactly the most quantitative measurement of durability available, but it's good enough for MX6ers
The crank is forged and strong enough for anything you are likely to make with the 3 valve head, I would think the rods would be also as most Mazda along with most Jap 4 bangers come with forged rods. Not really to make them stronger than cast rods but to allow them to be lighter than cast with similar stregnth.
Forged rods also tend to bend when they fail rather than break, thus sparing the rest of the motor from utter destruction.

f2 rods are much more beefy than 1g DSM rods and are definately not going to be the weak link in the engine. The only reason to replace them would be to save weight on the rorating assembly because I would guess they will stand more power than the head can flow.

I believe the rods are forged and the crank is cast...check the casting lines on both parts.
From my understanding, thick "cast" line = forged, thin 'cast' lines = cast. Am I wrong? If I am, please take a look at the forged RF diesel crank...check out that thick 'casting' line.
i didnt think any of our motor was forged. i know the crank isnt from the last time i had one machined. but the machinist did say that for not being forged, its one of the harder steels he's had to machine. guess he went through a few bits on it.

the line on the rods is pencil thick, maybe a bit more and the line on the crank is paper thin
Anyone got a photo of an F2 rod? I can't get to any engine work until next week at the earliest, and by then I should have an F2 lying around that I can tear down for a peek inside..
