have to replace driver's axle, got tips?

So I have to replace my driver's side axle. I'll most likely be taking one out of an mx6 GT. Would any year work from the 1st gens, or should I look for a certain year? Also, any tips for doing the removal from the 6 and putting it on my 626. I'll be getting the axle from a junkyard 6 GT in my area.

any year should work. and as far as doing the removal be sure to bring a can of penetrating oil!!!! and a breaker bar, you also might want to be sure you have plenty of time specially if there is any rust.

the dx one is smaller around. the axles are bigger for the LX and the GT and they were the same for the 626, MX-6 and Probes

If you have ABS make sure the new shaft also does. Besides that, use a new nut and make sure you torque it plenty and stake the nut.

I'ts a piece of cake to bake a pretty cake, if the way is hazy

the gt and non-gt axles are different, just make sure that the axle is fully seated into the transmission and have fun getting that axle nut off

Huh? The DX and LX have an identical drivetrain and the same axles. It's the GT which has bigger axles. If you read your post it doesn't make any sense.

Okay. I don't have ABS, so hopefully out of the two possible GTs at one location and the 3 at the other, one won't have ABS. I was looking in my manual and it didn't show much. I'll post a pic of it in a minute. But I won't need to tear THAT much out, will I? As for putting it onto my 626, would sixsick6's write up have any use?

You will also want to invest in a new circlip if you're using a used axle. Go to the dealer for that and the axle nut. And as a word of warning ... I just read a thread where someone drained their transmission but can't fill it yet because they now can't get the speedo cable out.

buy the part numbers from the mazda house, the front hubs only choices were 4 wheel disc brakes or front disc and rear drum. the DX had disc drum and the Lx and GT had 4 wheel disc brakes. i havent been able to compare this but from what i saw in the parts catalog thats would be the case.

I dunno about mx6's but my 626 lx sure doesn't have 4 wheel disc brakes.

If life were easy, everyone would do it.

Out of all the LX's ive seen, ive never seen one with rear wheel disk. Get a bigass breaker bar, and a steel pipe if you dont have air. Dont put too much effort into loosening the hub bolt, because if you do than your gonna f up your alignment. I ended up taking mine to the local shop and having them bust the hub bolt loose, after f'ing up my alignment.

how do you mess up your alignment by removing a component that has NOTHING to do with any of your camber/caster/toe adjustments???

thats like saying you can wear out your clutch by turning on the radio!

its called jumping on the breaker bar to get the bolt loose. After I gave up, my wheel was at 9:00 when i was going straight.

4-Wheel disc brakes were an option on the LX's. Dx's ... no!

But back to the originators topic. If you're pulling a used axle at the junkyard you may need to get very creative in removing the donor's axle nut. The majority of the yards here elevate the cars so you may be dealing with a spinning wheel. Unless the yard offers mobile air tools you should bring a friend along to help ... or laugh with as the day drags on.
