Just make sure it doesn't leak and make sure your timing is correct. I'm guessing you don't own a timing light.

I wouldn't touch it unless it's leaking. Have never seen a 1G water pump leak, personally. Not a normal maintenance item.

I've seen an old one leak ... and the new one to replace it too. What a pain. But once you replace it, it's business as usual. Just make certain you purchase the rubbers set from Mazda if buying an after market pump.

mark all your stuff, with a line, and put it all back as usual.
you should maybe slip a new timing belt on there while your there.....

Let me play the role of a n00b..

What does changing the water pump (or just the gasket) have to do with needing a timing light?

Advancing the timing is safe to do on the n/a. Fill up with 93 octane, and advance it until it starts to ping under load, then back off until it dosent do it anymore. Easy enough. However you dont need a timing light just to change the water pump & timing belt. You either put it back together right or not.

no... Dont mess with the cam gear. Put that exactly the way you found it. Rotate the distributor.

I have a timing light but I never needed it as long as I didn't unbolt the distributor. Just line up the middle of the tooth above the 1 on the camgear with the arrow on the housing and the notch on the crank gear with the mark. The dowel pin on the crank should go with the 1 on the gear. Put the belt on and rotate everything around a few times and if it's all set then everything will still line up. I've done this like 10 times and it's always fine. As far as advancing the ignition timing goes... I dunno. Factory advance seems reasonable to me. What your friend was talking about was probably advancing the cam timing (different type of advance than messing with the distributor) by messing around with the position of the numbers. I wouldn't recommend it.
