so my tranny went...
well a little history my ball joint pass side has been bad for a few weeks got some new lower control arms off eBay for cheap with new ball joints, and every time i shift gears feels like engine is flexing like mad, must be rear motor mount.
So on Sunday i was coming home from a buddy's and haven't gave it [shizzle] in a long time due to problems, i just go to work basically. and i gave it two 0-120KM runs one to a stop sign, then from the stop sign. well it was a straight road from the stop sign. later on down the road at about 2500rpm just cruising going 80ishKM my engine starts to rock back and forth, shaking alot, so i down shift to 4th thinking maybe my motor mount is toast or 5th gear is going, seems fine, then suddenly it does it again, so go to 5th and try to make it not come back. my turn comes up and i make a right; down shift to second, and accelerate threw the turn, and the wheel binds up, jumps and makes a thud as if the engine bottomed out where mount should be, so i immediately clutch in and go to 3rd and start to limp home. its a straight road about 15kms to town, not more than 5 minutes after turning onto the road my car starts pulling hard to the left, so i hold it hard to the right, i don't want to whip the wheel back and forth to try to unbind it because I'm afraid my ball joint just went and my wheel might fly off lol, not having CAA i keep going. I get into town and to my street without turning the wheel more then 5cm each way since wheel binding up(straight road), i slow down for my turn down shift to 2nd and the wheel binds up again and hops a few times around the corner, the engine jumps around all the way to my house, i park it. On Monday i install my lower control arms, new front sway bar end links, and a rear motor mount, i tightened the lower control arm bushings to much with the suspension under no load and the car is about 3 inches to high lol, so i take it down the road to make sure i can take it to work tomorrow and the problem is still there. also now when i clutch in the tranny makes noises as if a belt is squealing, and the problems are even worse. so could be axles binding up (not likely) or something in tranny went (diff pin?). if you have any ideas as to what it could be thanks for the input. sorry for the long read just wanted to fully explain what happened. But he says its pulling to one side, the diff cant do that. It could make you try to go straight, but not make you turn. That sounds like a radius rod to me. As for the rocking back and forward, hard to know :-| Can you check the mounts to ensure that they are in good shape?

i originally thought the hard shifting was due to rear motor mount gone, i swapped in a new rear one when i did lower control arms and the one i was putting in wasnt as stiff as the one i took out
. and still bad. but the car goes in every gear. when i coast in neutral and turn nothing happens but in gear on throttle and the wheels bind up. so shouldnt be axles cuz it would happen in neutral aswell. im not sure what it is, but ive been informed the tranny is a junk yard one (i knew that) and it has over 350,000kms lol. |

oh, bearings worn and gears are binding into the case I'd say. Could be wrong though :-(
My old mitsi did that in 1st. It was pretty funny, you'd accel to 50kph, lift and it would bind up hard! wouldnt do it if you kept flooring it though. technique = pulling stick out of gear as you hit the clutch, and lifting a fraction later. dangerous car that was! |

when my tranny let go, for no reason at all, it shook let that too, I though I had a mount let go.
when the wheels were slightly turned, and going slow, the whole car would jump! (the front was completely locked) it got even worse when I was driving straight. I finished my trip to work, and got it towed home..... I couldn't tell you what it looked like inside the tranny though, i've still not pulled it apart. Its gotta be pretty crunchy inside though, as it sure sounded nasty! |

after you swapped the tranny was everything good again? and no feeling like motor mount was gone? cuz mines felt like motor mount is gone for a few monthes so i guess its been broken for a while lol, might be cuz of the 16 times i raced at the track i dunno
. lol but w/e it is finally let go and im experiencing similar problems to what you had. so i will swap it and update, if anyone else has similar experiences or other ideas lmk. Thanks Brandon |

Mine was FUBAR in less that 20kms...... Yours might not be the same. Try jacking the front end, and turning the wheels by hand, in gear, and see if there are any sounds...... mine was so bad, I opened my hood, put it in gear, let up on the clutch, rolled about 2 feet, and it shook and shaked so bad, I swear the engine looked like it was ready to jump out........ Or, you could also try draining your oil and see how it looks..... |

Noooooooooo, do something, ANYTHING, about that jack stand NOW!!! you are risking your life and limbs! Driving is less fun with no legs I hear!
As for the diff, that can happen on mazda fwd boxs when you pull the axles out I *think* so that may not be your issue. Wait till you get it apart. Fred. |

Yes fred, there known to rotate, and drop! And, the only thing to do then, is split the case. Do yourself a favour, and put a wooden dowl through there so they don't go kerplunk! I've had some that didn't budge during a tranny removal, and then some that want to move as soon as that second drive axle is removed. (a wooden broom handle also serves as a good tool too) and as far as that holding up the engine, you do have mounts up top yet that are connected that will hold the engine too....... a 4x4 post, and a chain from the top is a safer way though. You are going to split the case to see whats happening though right??? |
