Engine Cooling Fan Prob.

Today i just bought an 88' LX thats in excelent conditon for my area. The only problem ive found with it is that the engine cooling fan isnt working like it should. The previous owner rigged it so when i put 2 wires together it will run, and i have to take the 2 apart to turn it off. Has anyone else had a problem similar to mine? If so, what most likely is the problem? How can i fix this without it being a rig job? Thanx for your imput.

Brandon

My first thought, put a switch between those 2 wires. This sounds like a good idea, as I suspect that this hook-up is an add-on to the fan's regular function (ie. it is temperature controlled and therefore the fan will only turn on when the engine is getting too hot). Have you checked that?

I would check to see if that sensor works first but if all else fails, go fo the switch. Connect the wires and then start the car (make sure the car was cold first). If the fan kicks on emediatly then try putting a switch inline to turn it on from the inside. If the fan doesn't kick on immediatly then wait and see if it does. If it does when its warmed up it probably works right. Then wait to see if it turns it self off.

are any of the sensors on the thermostat housing broken off? If so, the cooling fan will not work. Also check the relay right in front of the battery.

Check your heat sensor you have to choices
1-the sensor is death
2-wire trouble (connection or cut wire)

solution:

Go for the switch
or by a new sensor

I had the same thing when i bought my car..The problem was in the relay and took my about 2 min to fix. But he(the jerk i bought the car from) had cut out some of the wires to the fan and ran it off the fuse box ,which had to be replaced cause he had cracked it and some of the fuses were loose..If that wasn't bad enough just to show you what kind of idiot had the car before me he had 195/60/15's in front and 205/70/15's in the rear, a cb wired the fusebox(in addition to the fan) and some pioneer speaker boxes mounted above the door handles(they were huge)...You should've seen this big ass antenna on the trunk like a flag pole..
Needless to say i took all that isht off when i got the car home..

Does your heater/ac blower fan work? If not, then you have a different problem entirely.
