I had a decent running 1g however i knew it wasnt "right" so i took it to a local performance shop and they told me they couldnt help me. Granted it was nice that they admitted they would only waste my money but now I need a tune badly because I let their "buddy" touch her and do not know everything they did. I am willing to drive a few hundred miles(maybe more) to find a true mx6 guru. I can pay for dyno time and pay the guru I simply do not want anyone who is not intimatly "in-tune" with the 1g mx6 gt. any advice would be great. Im in Bham Al 35205
Ps I do understand a great deal of the venacular and have done all the work up to this point myself by reading post on this forum so thanks in advance to whoever replies and ill try not to noob out on you too bad.
What do you have done to it so that they can tune it? If you are on the stock system with no upgrades then about all anyone can do is set your timing lol.
sorry. Ebay t3/4 12psi,downpipe to magnaflow, 360cc saab injectors,2.5"turbo piping,
Vaf-has been adjusted
timing- has been adjusted
idle- has been adjusted.......................none of it by me and now it falls on its face. Its almost like it was adjusted to idle but not drive. Seems fine til mid-upper rpm then hits the wall. Use to run 12-13psi fine and ran better but never impressed me.
Darkmx6 im really leaning towards timing and vaf. I suppose I should set initial timing first and see if it correct. 9* is a odd number and the "buddy" may have off. I have played with the dizzy to no avail.
Wow. Thanks for all the responses. I will try to reply from memory.
It is an 88 gt, The timing is now back at 9*- Vaf replaced with donor off an 89pgt, not boost cut due to overboost or knock/lean, all piping checked and rechecked.
I did an injector swap from 310 to 360 and though the injectors may not be the issue I think perhaps moving the intake manifold could have done something. Ive read there are 7 bolts holding it down(5 top 2 bottom) however I only loosened the top five and moved the manifold maybe 1/4 inch and only on the passenger side(to clear the rail). Perhaps there is a leak there but I pressurized the nsystem to 20psi and found no leaks.
fuel filter is new as well as the injectors but i have yet to pressure test the fuel system or check the inner tank sock/pickup as I was hoping of course to find the problem elsewhere.
I hate to even call it tuning as I do not have a wideband or a standalone(YET) and it is broken so fixing will come before and "tuning" in any case.
Thanks again gurus. As i have told many of my lesser mechanically inclined friends I would be lost without the help of those who have come before me.
How do I give credit to those who deserve it here as on many other forums? Karma etc
Thanks again people. I have done everything you have mentioned and am now puling hard again. I think the overall largest conrtibuting factor was a bad fpr. I screwed the pooch on that one doing an injector install. Ive contacted the above mentioned owner of the chipped ecu and if it is in fact what i need and he accepts my offer I will have it soon. I had a chipped ecu before and fried the injector drivers using low impedance injectors(I did not install those) so it will be nice to boost to 15 again. I have a wideband in my ebay shopping cart but want the ecu first. I already have an exhaust temp gauge so im not too worried about nuking anything-unless you all know something I dont(insert noob comment here), which is likley.
Yea I think that wideband may have just moved up the list. Butt dyno is telling me I still have some fuel issues lurking. Just found a brand new fuel tank for 93 bucks shipped and a wal 255 pump for 70 so im stoked. car was a parts car that i restored so the tank is trashed and for $93 ill save money in the long run on filters. hopefully with a clean fuel system and larger pump i can meet the fuel demands. From what ive read the 255 isnt necessary but for 70 bucks as long as its not a negative thing to have then wth. anyone know if the stock fpr can handle the 255lph pumps?
ive decided that a wal 190 is going to be all i need until i go standalone. Ive only got 360cc injectors and an ebay .50t3/4 turbo and with 125,000 hard miles I should probably do a full rebuild before going any higher than 1500cc/15psi.
i never got a reply from the ecu owner so if anybody knows where a chipped ecu for 88-89 f2t is lemme know. JayB would be great as ive had his chip before and it worked well with my setup at 15psi
there are lots of people who boost the stock engine even with lots of miles on it. If I were you I would pick up a spare engine rebuild that at my leisure and boost the crap out of the current one till it gives out. I think you will be surprised how much abuse it can take. What are your compression numbers telling you?
If I remember correctly compression is in the 150 range except on #3 where it drops to the 138-142 range. There is a decent amount of noise coming from the area of #3 and im not yet sure exactly what it is because its my daily and ive yet to do a valve inspection(planned for thanksgiving weekend) I do need to address the hla's but who doesn't. I am actually looking for an f2t to build but have not come across enough info on overbore ratios/piston size/ and am not quite sure just what my approach should be. Once I decide bore/stroke/cam(s)/etc I am planning to build the car into a real beast. Im not really in to going over 130mph or so and then only in short burst so I am building for the low to mid punch. should be pretty easy with the f2t. You can easily just smash fuel and air together and get a ton of power but i really want to have the throttle response and power when I want it. I have considered lowering the size of my turbo piping just to get a lil more low/mid but feel overall its better to have the breathing room for the bigger turbo.
I am trying the carburated f2 cam. It has more lift and i think more duration. I think that would be better than any regrind. They come from out side the US. a guy from new Zealand forgot who grabed me one and sent it to me.
As far as looks they look the same but it has an extra lobe for a mechanical fuel pump
So im guessing concealer is saying if it aint broke dont "fix" it / ie: the f2t is already a low//mid beast and to just do a generic rebuild. hmm... I hear ya
Dont really know why i thought everyone was a mind reader again(i do that sometimes)
The cam(s) reference was supposed to elude to an fe3 swap and i forgot to retouch the idea in the post.
As far as dropping in a new cam upon rebuild I am starting to doubt my options anyway, however this doubt comes with a realization that Mazda put a lot more scratch and sniff into these cars then I will ever muster. Concealer you and Darkmx6 make an aweful strong argument for how solid the f2t is from the factory. I plan to find out
I drove mine for almost 5 years with a blown head gasket and and still made enough power to trap 118mph in the quarter mile with over 200k miles, unopened.
Just sayin'.
But what was really saying is that you don't bore a small displacement 4 cylinder for the purpose of "power." You do it just to clean up the bore if you need to.
We don't have easy stroking options, and it's a huge waste of time/money. (Mazda G6 crank could probably somewhat easily be used if you get creative to get a whopping 2.3 litres.) 2.2 litres is plenty.
In that case! Does anyone know if there is a sticky that covers flywheel weights and their effect on driveability, etc. I hate just asking a ton of random questions but I can not find the info anywhere- even the probe sites are lacking( and they usually have a plethora of info)
I love that clarkson quote and read it every time I see it(which is a lot) He is by far the better of the three Top Gear host. Do you know if they ever covered late 80's turbo cars because I would love to see that.
