Different water pump turbine?
well, i went over to panther37's the other day, and i pulled off his water pump.
much to my amazement, we had different water pumps on our cars! i brought my old stock one to use as a reference to remove all the screws... and we noticed (not like it was really hard to notice .) that the turbine on the water pumps were completely different!any explanation? antiSUV, i'm looking at you... http://www.deadmeat.freeservers.com/...mp-compare.JPG -meaty |

Good find
Maybe the factory had different vendors or possibly incorporated a running update with a better flowing design (or possibly more cost effective.) One never knows for sure, with all the different models using the 2.2 Mazda motor. There was also a Mazda manufacturing plant in Canada. You would think that the Turbo should have a stronger pump, but even if it did, you know how generic the aftermarket replacement parts are. Perhaps, it's an original made in Japan ! Ha, hah !!!!

actually, when i got a new water pump for my mx-6, they gave me one that looked exactly like my stock one. (the one on the left).
because his is an '89, wouldnt you think they'd be the same? or maybe the fact that my mx-6 is the jm vin #, and his is the american vin #, 1yv. maybe thats why their different? -meaty |

on the topic of h2o pumps...i have just replaced my leaky pump (pissed the hell over the whole garage) and how it makes a rather loud whirling sound that goes louder with revs. any clue to make it stop? my mechanic says its usual for mazda cars. hhmmmm.

Its a Jap water pump , the groove in the pump is to accomodate a single use expanding "O" ring . You can use a normal gasket .
I have that pump on my FE3 and my F2T has the newer pump. |

That's interesting. I tore apart my old F2T when PSI pulled it out of my car prepping for the FE3 swap. When I pulled the water pump of fit looked like the one on the left. My car was also the JM1 vin #. Must be a Jap thing as Cam22T noted. Now I have the Sephia water pump b/c of the FE3.

I just picked up a water pump from the dealer for my '92. Part number 8AK1-15-010A which I will be installing tomorrow along with my AdamTurbo aluminum crank pulley
provided the weather cooperates. It's sitting in my back seat at the moment but I'll be sure to take a critical look at it tomorrow and maybe snap a pic of it next to my old one if it's different. |

When I replaced mine the old looked like the one on the left. The new one looked identical to the one on the right. It included itself and the gasket. I had to go to Mazda and buy new rubbers because mine had all crumbled away when I took off the leaky pump. They cost almost as much as the new pump itself. Apparantly, when you buy the water pump from the dealer they come with the rubbers ... and the gasket is sold seperately.
