checking tranny fluid

Im having problems reading my dipstick for the ATX. When the car is off...it reads that fluid is in there, up to the 3rd notch, or higher? When its running, it does not read. There are 3 notches at the bottom of the stick, along with a temperature. Towards the middle of the stick there is another temperature engraved. How far up along the stick should the fluid be, when running?
(How could something so simple, be so complicated?)
Thanx..
