Opened BROKEN TRANNY...HERES YOUR PROBLEM CAFFEINE, REBEL,LOKTAI...MX6ERS BEWARE

MY PROBLEM: You all know my story. Transmissino started actin funny MONTHS ago and then got stuck in 1st. bought a new one, waiting on clutch. Anyways got bored and sick of Brandon naggin for me to open it up so I got out my hammer and started tearin it open...

MY WORK: Inside at the end of the internal change control rod (checkyour manuals) there is an internal shiftgate bolted down on the tranny case by like 3 small bolts. It keeps your H pattern in check. Except of course when its only being held on by 1 bolt. The other two worked their way loose (I'll tell you how in a sec) and basically it was like trying to find a needle in a haystack when shifting. Luckily the bolts were cought by my magnet. anyways the change mechanism got hung up between two shift rods kinda and was completley out of the shift pattern. Basically, by trying to pull the stick out of first i was also trying to engage 4th at the same time kinda. Its hard to explain but it was STUCK.

THE SYMPTOMS: if you have relocating or floating gears, for example sqeakynoises in 5th or reverse relocating it self this might be your problem. To fix it. you'llhave to crack open your tranny case and bolt the gate back down and use some anti back out or locktite this time.

The rest of my tranny looked FLAWLESS for its mileage. reverse showed minor signs of grindage, which i had done trying to find it. All the syncros looked fine too. Forks looked great.

TO FIX:Unfortunatley you just cant crack it open, rebolt and reasemble. You'll need a rebuild kit. So if you wanna fix it go ahead, other wise buy a new tranny or atleast take yours out and take it to a pro.

CAUSE: One cause is mileage and wear and tear but what seems to be the MAIN catalyst is the fact that I had driven it (and previous owner too) for a long time with bad shifter bushings. I Believe this caused the gates premature detatchment.
IF YOU HAVE A LOOSE SHIFTER REPLACE ALL BUSHINGS AND BALL SEATS IMMEDIATLEY IN THE SHIFTER AND LINKAGE RODS. DO NO SLAM GEARS LIKE THIS DRIVE SOFTLY! When you have no shifte bushings the internal shift gate takes a abeathing with every movement of the shifter, until eventually, the gates bolts work themselves loose. Then if you're unlucky something will get jammed up.

I forgot to look at second gear to see why we grind it so much but I'll take a look at that another day and see whats up. my general look at all of the syncros: the looked in pretty good condition for age. I'll check on it.

I'll post pics ASAP of the tranny internals, i gotta scan my polaroids.

That is what I THOUGHT happened to mine; and has happened to several on probetalk. As I stated in my PM's though, it was only motor mounts for me. I found this out AFTER I had opened my tranny and put it back together.

In fixing this problem, WHY would you need a rebuild kit? I had mine open, was able to get to these screws, cleaned the magnet and had it re-assembled in no time. I just used grey silicone to reseal the tranny and re-torqued the nuts under the 5th gear cover ect ect.

10K later and no problems.

Sounds like to me you now have a spare tranny.

That's what I thought would be the problem. something coming loose. Looks like I can fix my own tranny and save some money from having to buy another one. I want to say thanks shannon, you saved me $550

Maybe I'll throw that money into a PG and cryotreating the diff while I'm in there. as soon as my garage is rearranged and I can get my car in I'll be tearing out my tranny to fix it. wish me luck

well you dont HAVE to have a rebuild kit but you might as well replace all the races and anything loose or old. Plus there are a couple lock nuts that will need to be repunched to prevent back out (you really don't want that to happen when your driving). Kinda like the hub nut holding your axles in.

Our transmissin isn't nearly as complicated as the manual might suggest. It's really just 3 rods, 3forks, and a few levers. and its reallly small.

Ouch!! On my tranny it was the side spider gears on the differential that had been eaten alive. Pieces of them were jamming gears up, and were all over the magnet. Good luck to ya!
