Hey Sick;
Realistically speaking, I'd buy a documented low mileage pristine '92 GT totally loaded and go from there. I don't even think that I'd mess with rebuilding the motor. Maybe some basic mods and a lot of detailing.
Keep the classic turbo GT clean and simple ! That way, a person could expect another 10 years of pure driving pleasure.

well I looked a few newer GT's which had MORE mileage than mine does, and the fact that I'd be left with an 89 comes into play. I'm basically in the spot to either buy a new car or spend a few bucks on my GT. I have more to spend than $5K, but 5K would go a long way with an 89 GT or put a good dent in a new car
well thats what I'm trying to decide, it's either going to be spend it on my 89 GT which will be for fun and speed but get me nowhere except faster, or spend it on something more realistic which will get me to work for the next few years.... of course the latter isnt as fun
I could spend it on engine, suspension, brakes, turbo and exterior, but where would I actually be after that? I could just put the whole thing down on a new car and be done with it

exactly, unless it's in pristene condition and totes an FE3 turbo like Fallguys, then who gives [shizzle] that looks to buy it. Going fast only gets you so far, and once you get there THEN WHAT? It's not like I'm going to get anywhere except fast and have fun, but how long does that last, and for what? It's a dilemma because I feel obligated to this car because I love it so much. But a newer car would give me less problems and last longer than the $5000.00 I'm contemplating spending
It's all your call sixsick. I spend hundreds of hours doing motor work on my car because I love to go fast. Even though I'm losing money, it doesn't bother me all that much anymore.

yeah me neither, which is why I'm leaning towards using it on my 6. The smell of a new car is very enticing though, especially with free oil changes and wiper blades for the first few months
for 5 gees, i'd buy a new F2T crate engine($2500-3000). upgrade turbo and intercooler($1500). that's all i can do for 5 gees. fixing up cars is expensive.
i feel in my own experiance, is that these cars are a hobby that gets you from a to b fast. being that they are a hobby means that you like working on them and upgrading them. that is half the fun in owning a car. if you buy a new car you will eventually get bored with it and will end up modding it which will cost more money. in my own opinion i would spend the money on the gt and make it better than the new car you are considdering , it will be cheaper and more fun in the long run. just my 2 cents.
as for what to do with the money, i would do a brake upgrade as you will need to stop faster if your engine is faster. also if it needs it i would consider a paint job . undercoating is also not a bad idea if your in a cold rainy area

Sick, it appears as though you are badly torn dealing with the emotional parting of your "6". It need not be so dramatic, as realistically speaking........Take enough money to make your GT dependable and look good for a few years. (Say spend maybe like $2000 on it.)
Then with the remaining money, invest in some funds and let it grow. It would take a lot more than a new car's smell and free oil changes to obligate a person into a 5 year car loan.
But however, if one had closer $10,000 to spend, there's a bunch of different "sport's cars" from the later '90s that would be worth thinking about. The market is really off on this type of car, and you could get a real bargain.
The one new car that does have my attention is the 2005 'Stang, which will be assembled at the Flat Rock plant in Michigan. This just so happens to be the same plant that Ford and Mazda collaborated with the building of the 626/MX6/Ford Probe.

Personaly if I had that much money to spend and couldn't upgrade because of California state emissions, I'd move to another state. Or at least register it in another state. I can't even begin to imagine a place that is so strict about vehicle upgrades. My state doesn't even do emission testing, I know it's better for the future and all, but dang it's a real buzzkill.
