Code 05, coughing sputtering, black smoke

Well I got my new motor swapped in after blowing the old one up with a 175 shot. This motor is a '92 PGL motor with 117k but ran perfect ( Yes, it's an n/a longblock)

Anyways, at first the car refused to start. After messing with some vacuum lines and connections I got it sputtering along but I had to rev the hell out of it to keep it running and its just pouring black smoke out the exhaust. The only code I'm pulling is 05- Knock sensor. Could there be a connection between this code and the car running so bad? It's running terrible, not even good enough to move the car more than 10 ft.

i thought the n/a longblocks don't have a knock sensor.

sooooo you are puting a n/a block into a gt w/turbo etc. did you change the distrubitor too or did you keep your old one (gt)?

Did you move your GT knock sensor over to the NA block? I assume you moved your GT intake manifold over, and are running everything off the GT ECU, with the GT distributor right?

If not, your problem is probably trying to run it with the LX distributor, change all that out.

I'm using an n/a longblock. I'm using all my GT sensors, manifolds, and even swapped over the oil filter thread pipe so I could fit my oil cooler on the n/a longblock, as well as the oil pressure sending unit and knock sensor off my GT. I'm running a GT ditsy, and have switched between 2 with no luck.

The ONLY thing I can think of is that sensor, like maybe the car thinks it;s knocking and is going into a super rich safe mode. I've looked over everything more than once and killed my battery 3 times cranking it over.

I'm having this exact same problem after I R&R my cyl. head. It idles fine (~1000 rpm) but when you boost, it sputters like crazy. I did a fresh tune-up, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, even changed the distributor out. I get a CEL when it sputters, and I pulled a code 05 - Knock Sensor. The connectors for the knock sensor is connected. Oh, when it sputters, the tach goes crazy (jumps up and down)...Also The firing order is correct 1-3-4-2...

I pulled out the brand new plugs (gapped at .040) after a short boosted run and they were black. I can't imagine my knock sensor taking a [shizzle] after R&R of the head.

Rebel, did you ever figure it out?

I did fix it a few days after I started this thread. Turned out to be a loose hose clamp causing unmetered air to enter the intake.

It was weird though, I never pulled a VAF code. Also, after a few resets the knock sensor code went away.

I fixed the problem. Turned out the ground by the distributor was disconnected.
