This combination (17x7, 40mm offset with 215/45 tires) worked well on my car. However, my car is a 90-92 with an unknown brand of aftermarket gas struts (Gabriel?) that were installed by the previous owner. So I can't guarantee that this tire/wheel size will work with the stock 88-89 AAS struts. The fit with the 215/45/17's is very close, and the rear strut's lower perch location/construction is critical to the fitment. (There is lots of room in the front)
I thought I recalled a member on here that had 17x7's with 40mm offset and 215/45 tires on a car with the original 88-89 struts without a problem. I do know that the 90-92 aas struts supposedly are different from the 88-89, and allow more clearance for the rear.
This is all assuming that you don't want to use spacers. (I certainly did not). With spacers and/or longer wheel studs, I'm fairly certain you could make anything fit.
