air conditioning always increases fuel consumption.

your last statement about more mpg at reduced power makes no sense.

in order to maintain velocity and accelerate the engine must burn a certain amount of fuel, AC compressors always draw a significant amount of power and so either:

a) reduced % of power goes to the wheels and you slow down or

b) burn more fuel to maintain speed and also power to the aircon

same in the case of putting the windows down, but the effect is MUCH smaller. unless youre driving with all windows fully down

a/c is more efficient at higher speeds, windows down at lower speeds. myth busters did this test a while back.

you can test this yourself, preferably in a small car. i used to drive a little 1.4 litre vauxhall corsa i think you call them overseas. when cruising along you let off the throttle and turn the aircon on and immediately you can feel the extra drag on the engine. on the other hand you cant feel the same effect or any effect at all when you put the window down.

Thats 'cos your a/c draws a fixed amount of power, engine torque that equates to about 10kW at traffic speeds, but varies a bit of the speed range of the compressor with the temp differential between in and out ...blah..blah etc.

I used to have a diahatsu charade when i was uni (college) and it had 41kw at the flywheel, the a/c felt like it drew 25% of the power too!

There is no way the a/c would use less power than window down, unless your talking about all four windows down at 120km/h (75Mph)

best way to save gas is not to drive unecessarily... the rest of the stuff isn't going to make enough difference to buy you an extra cup of coffee.

I've been driving my rattle-trap 1Gen GT at 60 MPH and staying out of boost. (I'm sure this has all been covered, but oh well.) I am around 32ish MPG. Now I'm testing 55 MPH. Good thing I don't have a lot of traffic on my trip to work, or home.

Thread closed for now...if you have some new innovative way to save gas besides driving like some gray hair, hypermiling or using shi..errrr browns gas, please PM me and I'll reopen the thread. But for now, i think this thread has had it's usefulness as a sticky.

Really?
