Actually I meant the urethane bushings. They are a bit too soft for my tastes(90+ shore would be nicer) so Ill be changing them for something else.
As for the Konis, well yes they are "the koni inserts", but these.....these are something special (or more specifically...sport) ![]() Gavin |

-European inserts? No they arent (in fact that was a disaster trying to go that route)
-price? You dont want to know(cheap.....way cheap) -easier than the illuminas? No it isnt its actually more involved ( BTW the voiding of the illuminas warranty will happen anyway...remember you have to mill/grind the rear brackets wider, so More details when I get things going, Itll be a couple months. You will get NOTHING!....and you will Like it!
Ok fine. I would have mentioned anyway. The Konis are for a car you know very well...the 1988-1992 Mazda 626 GD coupe/sedan. Years ago(98?99?) I had seen a part number for the strut inserts. At the time I wasnt interested in aftermarket items for the LX and the numbers were lost. Ive been trying to locate those items ever since. When I saw that Jimsix(?) (Australian fellow) had them listed for his car it occurred to me that other fitments may be available. So I abandoned my search for the original fitment Konis and looked for another cars fitment that could fit. Eclipse? Road Race engineering said no.....2nd gen MR2? possible but their struts are made with caps that can be removed, wouldnt fit ours. Ok it HAD to be the European 2nd gen(I was reaching pretty hard on this)...after many e-mails to Koni Europe and Koni USA I decided this wasnt it either. *Sigh* And then...a miracle. Dutch626 messages me (as he often does, we trade stuff a lot) and sends me a link to an online ad in the netherlands and says "Is this what you are looking for?". I had kept Dutch up to date about my search for the Konis over the years. The ad was completely in dutch, but I knew exactly what it was about. Some company that used to deal with Mazda parts was liquidating old stock that was sitting unsold in their warehouse. 200 Euros (250$) for brand new, still in the box, original fitment Koni single adjustable inserts for the 1st gen MX6. They havent been made in @8-10yrs(in fact the build date on these is April92) I asked Dutch to place a deposit immediately to prevent them from being sold and sent 300$ the next day to him to buy them for me(and he worked his arse off to get them too). One month or so later....... Its good to have friends. Gavin Last edited by gavin : 4-17-04 at 16:38. |

Shox.com at least used to have a listing for the inserts I believe. I do remember the picture being red instead of yellow. Also, Adam had inserts on his old setup with them rigged up to also be a little height adjustable.

As much as I can figure The GE koni sports would be longer(?) than its US counterpart.
Ive e-mailed Koni Europe and Koni USA a lot about this and they have been reluctant to give info. They say "a critical measurement is not the same" but have refused to say what. (again I think its the length). I have heard that autocrossers had them imported to use in Solo2 competition when the GE MX6 was THE car to have in the early/mid 90s for G-stock. If they did, then they must have been able to fit into the gutted stock struts. But this is where the questions started. Who had actually done this? I knew of no one to contact and Koni was very tight lipped. I was willing to take this on good faith though. Is the interior diameter of the GE struts the same as the GD struts? Probably? Manufacturers love saving costs by rehashing parts especially if its underhood. The US spec GE and GD struts are very similar but for a few adjustments (camber and height). Id have to take a chance that the bore was probably the same. IF (and its a big IF) the European GE struts are longer, they may be about the same size as the GD inserts? The front GD struts are @1" longer than the GE struts...right? (but if they were the same length as the GD specials, wouldnt Koni have just made them a direct GD application ???) So they may or may not fit the GD struts...may or may not be too long or too short and if they are too long then Id have to get them shortened by koni (who quoted a price of 80$ per strut). May or may not have to get them revalved for my stiffer springs (100$ per strut) all on top of the 155$ per strut price to have them imported........ACK!! The option of the GD specials was just as problematic. Purchace them(155$), shorten them(80$), have them converted to top adjustable and revalve them(120$ not including parts)...(the specials are valved less agressivly than the standard sports)....Double ACK!! Koni has a service where you can send in your standard struts and have them converted with Koni internals. Its called a "wet conversion". The prices on the features was also mindboggling....Triple ACK!!! Unbelievably Ground Control Advance Design seemed like the most sensible option at 400$ for a custom built double adjustable (separare rebound and compression) strut. I was pretty much resigned to the fact that this seemed to be my best option. And then I got Dutch626s instant message which made all of this completely irrelevant ![]() Bon chance mes amis Gavin |
