Thumbs up Gavins all out suspension mods

At the request of some folks. I submit my cockamamie plan to turn my ride into a semi track worthy vehicle. Much thanks to Ian S(aka, spoolinboost) for inspiration and squal282 for the hookups for track days.

The plan is simple. Tried and true products. nothing fancy, just an 8lb sledge. Simple, reliable, effective. I wanted a good platform with which to work from and be able to progress on when/if my skill improves. To that end i will be using these items.

urethane suspension bushings

(the fronts and swaybar bushings are already on the car).
My car is 12yrs old. Theres no excuse not to have new or upgraded items.

These are rear links that have the stock rubber bushings to be torched out

Cusco camber plates.

adjustment is good if you want decent tire wear and correct alignment. They also get rid of the old squishy strut mounts. The Ground control camber plates rock. they have both camber and castor adjustment. But at almost twice the price I just couldnt justify the expense

Ground control coilovers.

There are times when you can spend less and get more and there are times when you spend less and get, well...less. These were a bit pricey, but they were custom rates (450f/375r) with machined perches for the camber plates(machined by GC. they will do this upon request) and helper springs.

Tokico Illumina 5 way adjustables for the 93-97 MX6.

These will be modified to fit the 1st gen. The front strut will fit without a problem. It is about 3/4" shorter though(which turns out to be a good thing. On a lowered car a shorter body/shaft gives back some suspension travel which would have been lost and doesnt give as much droop(downtravel) to the suspension). the rears are the same length but the mount to the spindle needs to be widened by about 1mm.

I think with the springs I have I may be at the limits of the illuminas dampening abilities. What i would have liked was Koni sport(yellow) adjustable inserts. I know there is an application for our cars. I think its the 1st or 2nd gen mitsubishi eclipse (they would have been 1" shorter)but I cant be sure. Another option which is way cooler is KYB AGXs. They are valved much stiffer than the illuminas(GAB adjustables are rebadged AGXs) but are cheaper. If I can find the answer to the Koni mystery then I could use the same fitment for the KYBs and then use those

I also have a set of 2nd gen probe 16" 5 spoke rims(yeah. they are kinda heavy(23lbs) but they are bombproof and I got them for cheap) . Those will be shod with 225/50/16 Kumho MXs

New swaybars will be on the way soon. Whiteline (australian co.)makes a set for the 1st gen MX6/626GD. 22mm front(2mm thinner than stock)/ 18mm rear(2mm thicker than stock). Australians rock:thup:

So thats the plan. Ive given all of this a lot of thought and have started to move in the direction of actually doing something(too much thinking hurts after a while and leads nowhere). It will still be a bit before this is all done though.

If anyone has any comments, questions, criticisms, sage wisdom to impart, please feel free.

Gavin

I'm interrested in where you got the bushings as well. Our suspesnions are going to be very similar.
Mine will be.
GAB lowering GYMKHANA springs, Cusco Pillow Ball mounts, Tokico Blue struts, energy suspension bushings, Front and Rear Strut tower bars, and the GT Rear end with disc brakes and the lower brace.
I love these cars for the fact that they can all be tuned differently. No two MX6s or 626s are the same.

I am using two different mfgs for the poly suspension bushings.

The front bushings are from www.superpro.com.au a division of Fulcrum suspension in Australia. These are trick bushings, they have channeled grooves and waffling to keep grease on the bushing where it belongs. Nice. Unfortunately they only make bushings for the front control arms and I dont believe they have a US distributor. I went through them direct.

The rears are from www.noltec.com.au another Australian co. Noltec makes a full kit(front/rear/swaybars) Their bushings are not as trick as the superpros, but they seem to be of excellent quality. Noltec does have a US distributor in www.oztek.us .

Both applications will be listed under the 88-92(87-91 for australia)MX6/626GD

I have been trying to work with oztec to make these items more available to people on mx6.com and probetalk. I have found a packaging discrepancy with one of the bushing packages(1 of the items is the wrong size). We have found 3 packages this way so far. Once this has been sorted out by Noltec things should be a go.

If you do not want to wait. By all means, call Andy at Oztek and he will order you the necessary items. The bag in question is N61767 trailing arm bushings. Understand that the likelyhood is that the package WILL NOT BE CORRECT. Best thing to do is order two packages. The other thing to understand is that it will take about 1 to 2 months for shipping. Oztek does month to month ordering so they get a break in shipping by ordering in bulk.

I had to wait 5 months for the superpros. The noltecs took a while because of the initial order, then reorder to correct the wrong packaging(which also was incorrect, but I mixed and matched the two to get what I needed).

thats my story and Im sticking to it.

I honetly can not find really any data on the cuscos other than they are very good. The platas allow for camber adjustment. I dont know anything about the eibach stuff other than I didn't want to use anything from them or intaxs because I want the suspesnion to be different from everything else on the road.

BTW Gavin one thing I think we have both neglected is strut boots. I might have to buy some off color ones.lol

He he. Got the strut boots covered.

I wont be able to use the stock ones because the GC/eibach springs are 2.5" diameter. So whats a guy to do when he wants to protect his strut seals? Answer...Condoms. Just the thing that will work

NPA..just for you

It seems kinda puny though. I was thinking of getting those super thick elastic bands that are used to tie up broccoli or just double up on the o-rings.

Hey gavin on your piro-mounts did they come with 2 small metal peices about 1 inch long and look as if they go round the strut shaft. The cusco intrutions are in Japanese and I have no idea what they do. Also do we need to buy the rubber parts that go under the springs?

Evo...Yes I have those items also. Unfortunately I have no idea what they do. The inner bore is too small to fit over a strut shaft. The outer bore is too thick to fit into the bearing(like the nut/sleeve). It obviously does something...but what??

Actually, I was hoping you could provide some insight as I did not recieve instructions with mine. Perhaps its an FC only item. I'll have to search a bit on that.

I heard they were supposed to go on the strut shaft. The instrutions are unclear because they are in Japanese.
Also whats are you going to do about the ruber under the springs between them and the struts?
What about bump stops were are they and should I cut them?
