does anyone know if the new rx8 wheels will fit or even the 5 lug mazdaspeed prodege wheels.
RX8's will fit but i dont know about the offset but arent they 18's?? MSP will fit and they would look great. Pretty much an 5lug Mazda wheel would fit our cars

Since you work at Mazda, whats the RX8 (6speed) shiftknob worth??

Little update.

As Iggypop had mentioned, when using spacers(especially as large as mine) you may run into the problem of snapping stud bolts. Not a pleasant scenario.

Solution: longer, stronger stud bolts.

Even though I had gone to the trouble of finding OEM applications that were thicker shouldered than the stock pieces, Rickyracers suggestion of ARP bolts made them immediately irrelavant.

ARP 100-7708 hardened studs
late model Corvette/Camaro/Firebird
2.5" long, 12x1.5 pitch, 13mm knurl
@ 12$ for a pack of 5

not a problem.

Looks good Gavin. Did you notice much difference in handling when you switched from the Ecsta 712s to the Kumo MX tires?

Actually I'd been driving around on Bridgestone "Pretender" RE930i. The MXs are quite a step up, but its probably not a fair comparison. Im going from a 205/60/15 on a 6"wide rim to a 225/50/16 on an 8"wide rim, no contest. Still The MXs are ....interesting.

Grip is very good as they are rated at 220 treadwear(more on that in a sec). Noise is low except when you are slowing down(It caught me off guard initially). Steering response is great, but maybe not as snappy as your car (you had 215/45/17(?). Your sidewalls were much shorter than mine and becasue of that stiffer as well. The wear is unusual. They seemed to be very "220 treadwearish" but now that they have worn down a bit, they dont seem like 220 treadwear any more. Wear seems to be going at a much faster rate. Grip ,however, has also seemed to have increased. In fact Ive stopped driving on them but for autocrosses. The wear may be atributable to the alignment that I have on the car, but i dont recall the wear being this swift when they were new.

Bottom line..Im getting another set when these wear out. And Ill probably have Tirerack shave off a few 1/16ths beforehand.

those wheels look great on there, bet it handles great as well. your tire has more tread width than your rear mud flap, i bet some people look real hard at that and wonder

my only concern would be for the front...the wheel bearings, when you extend the distance from where the wheel used to mount flush, to where it does now, it acts like its moving down a lever, thats that much more leverage the weight of your car has on the wheel bearings. tries to make the bearing be a fulcrum, though probably not much more stress than it is stock, still Ive seen lots and lots of front wheel bearings go bad(i had a pair, believe they sound great!) theoretically spacing them will wear them out faster and ive seen people with those stoooooooopid 14" spoke wheels that have had problems with bearings, but their case is a bit more extreme, and i have yet to see someone do that to an mx6(well an LE on ebay, a long time ago...) anyhow looks great! i always wondered what those wheels would look like on our cars

I had thought about the wheelbearings also. In fact I had all of them replaced before doing this. Overall though I dont think there will be any undue stress to the wheelbearings with this setup, heres why.

If you think about it, the trick here is to have all of the loads forced through the centerline of the tires. If you have the stock rims(6"wide) there would be an imaginary line/point on the ground at its 3" centerline. Ideally, what I would need to do with the FD rims(8" wide) would be to space it enough so its 4" centerline is superimposed over the stockers 3" centerline. The loads are still transferred to the same imaginary point and the wheelbearings feel no pain.

I would have to do some measuring to see if Ive accomplished this, but I think Im somewhere (-/+5mm) in the neighborhood.
