Was watching a traffic cops program the other day..
Woman in a range rover gets pulled over... very dark tints on the front...
Copper says illegal, and woman just says the dealer did it..
He got this little light meter jobby out and tested them... sure enough, she had to remove them there and then, so had to call her hubby as she didn't want to break her nails (typical ! )
remember something about the copper saying they had to transmit just short of 75% light through.. anyway, just checked and its 75% through the windscreen, and 70% through the front side windows.. on cars from April 85 on... earlier cars is 70% on both.
So for the sides, that makes a 30% tint and below legal.. anything else and it's a fine and points.
John
addendum..
With bike helmets, the standard for visors is 50%, but then that is only for daytime use... at night you could still be pulled for it..
On the other hand, you can wear any tint of sunglasses, which makes the first part stupid...
