you can do an engine flush 100x, your not going to get rid of the tick unless you clean the old hlas or get new ones. They dont circulate oil, so the thick old crap inside of them wont flush out the pin hole it enters into.
Also the tensioner is one of the most common problems. Even if it was 1k ago.. You cant really rule it out.
Ive replaced 2 on the same car in under 200 miles. The owner bought them off ebay, untill finally I told him to get it from mazda because I wasent doing it again for him.
