As for the diff, that can happen on mazda fwd boxs when you pull the axles out I *think* so that may not be your issue. Wait till you get it apart.

Yes fred, there known to rotate, and drop!
And, the only thing to do then, is split the case.
Do yourself a favour, and put a wooden dowl through there so they don't go kerplunk!
I've had some that didn't budge during a tranny removal, and then some that want to move as soon as that second drive axle is removed.
(a wooden broom handle also serves as a good tool too)
and as far as that holding up the engine, you do have mounts up top yet that are connected that will hold the engine too.......
a 4x4 post, and a chain from the top is a safer way though.
You are going to split the case to see whats happening though right???
