Lets not forget about the reduced chance for detonation by injecting into the compressing chamber. Direct injection is even more beneficial on a rotary than on a reciprocating engine.
I also remember reading that the engine's intermediate housings are constructed of aluminum as opposed to using cast iron side housings which are HEAVY. The reduced weight and improved heat-transfer capabilities of the engine should enable a more aggressive tune as well.
