Suspension/Lowering Options and Prices

Ok you have two ways to go .. First you could go with some expensive coilovers but why waste the $$ ... Better to go with better performance and do a 2" drop ... (correct me anyone if Im wrong) But Ive been taught that if you drop more than 2" your not helping your handling ... after 2" its just overkill ... Now on show cars it looks nice .. But practically its just not a good idea ... And it costs more ... You have to get coilovers and you should get a decent brand ... So thats a chunk of $$ in itself .. And Ive never heard of coilovers fitting properly without some sort of modification or customization ... So you spend more money and have to put more work into it ... And not too mention unless you live on a track youll hit the occasional pot hole or speed bump ... and hopfully not damage the body kit if you have one .. and pray nothing worse gets ripped off the bottom of your engine ... RailRoad tracks are a bi*ch ...

Or your second option would be to go for performance and practicality and do a drop as close to 2" as possible ... I know that dropzone springs are supposed to do a 2" drop front and back ... and you can get a set on ebay or some online stores ...

Either way you go Id suggest new struts unless youve replaced them recently ... Everyone swears by tociko blues and illuminas (adjustable) but they cost 2x as much for the blues and hella more for the illuminas ... Than for a set of KYB GR2's you can get those for like $200 on Ebay ... and Ive noticed a few people on here have them and Ive never heard anything bad about them ...

In the end its your choice ... But if cost is a factor (which it is with most of us) ... Id do a 2" drop with some Dropzones and get a set of KYBs ... about $300-350 on all that ... and youll have better handling and not have to worry too much about hurting your car or tires ... Thats the cheapest best way to go ..

There are the other cheaper ways to go .. Like heating, cutting or clamping stock springs to make them shorter .. These are free or very very cheap ways to do it .. But it isnt very smart at all .. You are compromising the integrity of your suspension .. and trust me you dont want to be driving your car when something decides to break or snap off on you .. Plus not to mention the damage that will do to the car when it comes slamming down to the ground because theres nothing to hold it up any more ..

Another thing that many people seem to forget about the quality of your ride is tires .. I have the KYB/DZ set up and the tires I have are no more than rubber bands on my 17" Focals (i got them used with the wheels for a price I couldnt pass up) ... So my ride quality kind of sucks .. But when these tires are ready to be changed Ill be opting for a taller sidewall which will offer more cushon when i go over one of the 40 sets of rail road tracks in my town ..

those are the dz coil overs .. ive had a few sets of those .. Ive never bought them myself .. Ive only gotten them with cars that Ive bought .. and every time the ride is horrid .. adjusting them is a nightmare .. the sleeves are VERY weak/thin/cheap .. If you want a slightly lower ride than the cheaper springs will give you they may help you out ..

But to me they arent worth the trouble .. You have to cut your struts .. and i had a horrible time trying to get them all to the same height ... since they are all the same springs on them .. the rear doesnt sit as low due to the fact that there isnt an engine there ..

Springs are easier to work with .. easier to change .. and you dont have to destroy your struts to use them .. AND ... they last longer ..

If you REALY REALLY REALLY want coil overs .. the only really good way to go is to find a package where the coil over assembly is part of the actualy strut .. and they have the adjustable camber plates .. I think the Tien's and Ksport's are like this and Ive seen more .. but I forget the names and I dont have tthe time to search for it at the moment .. But .. THey are EXPENSIVE !!! So your paying dearly for the extra inch or so in drop ..

So to me its always about cost vs. reward .. L .. and an extra inch or so in adjustability .. isnt worth the $$ ..

So i have done the front end with drop zone coil overs setup .

I had to grind the little ring on the top of the strut, where the shiny cylinder comes out .

There is no way in hell that the coil over setup for the mazda mx6(supposidly) will work without grinding the [shizzle] out of your struts. im sorry but i have brand new ones and didnt want to try it.

on a high note when i bought them from seporath he gave me seized celica ones. They are set to exactly where i want them, I never cut perch at all and they slid on PERFECTLY! mind you after I grinded the little tiny ring.

So hows it ride???? Better then before no joke. on roads where there is numerous bumps (small annoying ones) she holds her ground and feel great, now i just have to do the back end

REMEMBER TOYOTA CELICA COIL OVERS (SLEEVES ANYWAYS) FIT PERFECT OVER THE MAZDA MX6 STRUTS.YOU HAVE TO GRIND LITTLE TINY RING, BUT DONT HAVE TO SHAVE THE ENTIRE SIDE OF THE STRUT JUST THOUGHT ID PASS ON THIS INFO I FOUND OUT BY MISTAKE

See with all the extra work and/or getting parts from other cars (and hoping its the right one) .. Just doesnt seem worth it to me ..

Springs are effective .. and cheap !! and last pretty mcuh FOREVER ..

Unless you have a ton of cash .. and are looking for the "slammed" look on a show car .. Then none of the others are worth the hassle or cost over springs ..

Just to clarify this question, there is NO DIFFERENCE IN SPRINGS FOR THE 4 CYLINDER AND THE V6 MODELS OF BOTH THE MX6 AND PROBE AS FAR AS AFTERMARKET PRODUCTS.

There we go. Hope that clears it all up.

Spring rate is the measurement for how stiff your springs are. The stiffer the spring, the less body roll in corners, which means better handling (you can take corners faster without feeling the body keeling over to one side). However, often times the stiffer the spring also equals a rougher ride, because it's doesn't move as much vertically as stock springs would to absorb impacts felt on the road. Shocks/struts play a bigger role at absorbing this road impact, but the springs also contribute.

Although I don't know what stock MX-6 spring's spring rate is, I'm guessing it's slighty less than the PGT stock spring rate listed.

So depending on what you're going more towards, either more performance or a more comfortable ride, then the list of spring rates should help you pick something suitable to your taste.

Well thats just it, they are no different, therefore spring rates are identical. Its to make spring buying idiot proof. People go "well I have a 4 cylinder, so I must need the 4 cylinder springs" just like your doing now. Cleaning products are the same way. Glass cleaner and interior cleaners are often the same product just in different containers.

In the end, since aftermarket manufacturers, especially Megan, don't have the funding to manufacture a set of springs for every car in ever engine configuration, they don't, but they label them like they do.

Result: V6 Springs and 4 Cylinder Springs ARE THE SAME!

If anyone knows any other spring rates to help fill in the blanks - please do. I'll be editing this thread to remove the chatter, so it can be placed in the FAQ - so don't be offended if your post is deleted.

Thanks!

- Ksport coilovers: standard is 5 kg/mm front and 3 kg/mm rear. This translates to approximately 280lb/in and 168 lb/in. Bear in mind other springs can be used with the ksport system in different stiffnesses, and acquired through d2 or ksport.
