trunk lock removal?

Im in a 97 mx6 and i wanna take out the trunk lock cylinder (since it does not work) and replace it with a rear view camera>

im in the trunk looking behind the trunk lock but cannot seem to figure out how to take it out.

So i was wondering if anyone had any experience with this and could help me out.

im trying to think what i did...if you reach up and behind the mechanism...

there was a ring to lock it in place....i took that off, the plastic around the outside [of the trunk] broke and i was able to use a screw driver to put a tad of pressure on it and the whole thing popped out...then i shaved it off...that was quite a bit ago...

There's a metal tab that holds it in place. Pull the tab away and the cylinder slides right out.

what he said! Good choice putting the camera in, it's a lot easier than shaving and cooler. It's fun to watch the cars behind you while your driving.

All it is is a U-shaped piece of metal .. Rather thin (resembles the clip that holds the brake lines in place on the struts) .. It slides into a grove at the base of the lock cyl. right against the sheet metal for the car .. Pull it away on the flat side .. and then the lock cyl will be free .. all thats left is the snap clip that hold the rod that connects to the physical latch and it should fall out with minimum pressure ..

i got it off... once i got the u clip off it came out like butter.... but that u clip was tight and lost it between the two pieces of metal that make up the trunk ... lol ..

o well...

but then the hole was too small so i had to make it better.... was an idiot and tried a circle bit.... but then after scratching a tiny bit of exposed paint realised there needs to be a center hole to keep it steady... then used a stone grinder bit and it worked perfectly.... now the camera is in and it works great..
its hooked into a 7" screen that is in my rear view mirror... works quite well.

i will take pictures and figure out how to post them up...

if any one has any suggestions on how to cover the exposed metal so that it wont rust without having to repaint the entire trunk they will be noted with thanks.

As yuo can see in my pic the camera is sitting on a black rubber washer. It protects the metal (in my case I didn't have to make the hole larger) and keeps water from getting in the trunk.

The washer I got did not start out the right size, I just found one wide enough and cut the center hole larger to fit around the camera.
