Just to throw this out there....

You COULD make the chamber volume larger if you added another tube section to the upper chamber and this would allow you more chamber volume and also let you mount the TB close to the stock area so there is less fabrication work with the cable. Heres a quick and dirty of the concept. I think it could help get more volume w/out getting too crazy.

fred,

the initial design goals are to improve intake manifold flow over stock >=15% and to keep fabrication labor to a minimum. i have not reverse engineered the stock intake manifold to make calculations for plenum volume and runner lengths for a comparison to my initial design. my approach is basically to increase the flow by shortening the intake path and increasing size of throttle body. currently, as the design stands it will look something like this.

i may have another iteration following dyno if it isn't satisfactory, but i'm pretty confident it will meet my goals.

drbrown,

those are my thoughts as well if i develop a second iteration. for the first iteration, my previous post has a picture of the plenum shape.

make sure you have 6 wbo2 meters and data logging happening while on there. if not, you are just guessing.

Well whatever you do GET BEFORE AND AFTER NUMBERS! That way we know how many ponies you killed or revived! Im gonna stay tuned for when you dyno, cant wait to see results!

King, I finally have analyzed the injector removal and think there are issues. I do not have a stock manifold to analyze how the fuel rail assemblies come out normally. Alas, due to traveling for the holidays I can't visit the junkyard for a little while to play. Can someone describe, in detail, the removal procedure of both rail assemblies from a manifold already off the engine. I am interested in whether or not one side must be removed first. How much one rail assembly may need to be moved up to give clearance for removing the opposite rail, etc. It's been a while since I disassembled so I cannot recall from memory. Pictures with the clearances would help if someone has them.

It does look like the fabrication will now get a little more complicated. My initial thoughts are to create more clearance over the top of the fuel rail assemblies by adding about 3/4" to an 1" section to increase the height of each runner. I am hoping the pieces can be cut from the firewall side runners. The section would be from the top of flanges to 3/4" to 1" straight up. The current pieces I have would be cut at the flanges and these sections would be welded in for the increased height. Looking at the one runner with the vacuum port nipples, it appears all that metal (non oval shaped) can be shaved off for aesthetics (will just want to weld those holes shut). I'll relocate the the vacuum ports to the main plenum piece behind the throttle body flange.

This would be extra work but I would consider moving the rails and using a totally different kind of injector. You could just drill holes in the outside wall of the runners and plumb the injectors there and you could use top feeders. So that would make it much easier to find injectors that fit as there are many more sizes and brands made for top feed style. Plus I think it would help. The stock injection setup isnt very efficient which is proved by how rich you have to run these engines to get them making power. The richer I run mine the more torque it makes. Mine likes 11:1 way better than 12:1. I know its not as affordable but its the best option if you want to make that style of IM. Just my .02. Even with the stock IM its a pain to get the rails out unless you have the right length alen wrenches. I have lots of slick little tools for that but not every does. Just throwing out ideas. Keep us posted!

I want to try and keep the stock injector location to allow the option to run double injectors with a second set on the top side. This is a little off subject, but my ecu I am building will have the capacity to run at least x16 injectors. I've been spending a little more time on the design of this ecu lately. I will post a website most likely in the next couple of months. This will be an open source hardware/software project, so any others who want to contribute to the effort can .
