trunk leak.

i searched on the subject in the forums and found solutions to 1g mx6's only...

This is the problem. When it rains hard i get water under my spare tire. Nothing else in the trunk is wet... just underneath the tire. I have NO idea where the leak is coming from. The compartment fills up with a good 2-3 inches of water and i can see the metal underneath has a good amount of rust now on it. Any help at all would be great.

Check behind the rear lights (they slide off outwards after undoing one screw each side). Mine let small amounts of water in through the mounting points not sealing against the body tight enough. A bit of sealant around the clips should do it.

common problem with the ford probes....i removed the rear tail light assy, dried that sucker out, and re-installed them and used silicone. Silicone is a PITA when you wanna remove the lights again, but no more leak.

I guess you didnt search enough...
There are a couple of threads re this issue...
Heres 1 of them....re 2nd gens...
.
http://www.mx6.com/forums/showthread...ght=trunk+leak (Check your trunk it may be full of water)
.
Plus my doc on the issue...
..my fix.. (a little long...)

..I'll join in here too, as I have HAD this problem for more than a year.. (almost a yr since I discovered it).. After lots of searching here..and I think I got it licked.. - Numerous places I silconed...
1-EVERY seam in the truck.. incl the lip where the rubber trunk gasket sits.. removed the gasket..silicone ALL the seams both top side and underside. Let dry, then put the gasket back on.. but do not compress it all the way down .. let the trunk lid do that.
2. Where the trunk lid supports attach to the side of the trunk.
3. Rear spoiler mounts.. all 3.
4. Plastic trunk latch screws.
5. Drip Rails (gutters) on both sides of roof.. incl where they meet the windows... (all 4 corners)
6. Corners of the front and rear window where the black window gaskets meet the body ...
7. I added a piece of weather stripping to the inside of the trunk lid (where the catch is) ..to prevent backdraft water being 'sucked up' in and under that part of trunk...('coz I noticed some rust appearing at 1 of the 3 weep holes...
8. Removed, cleaned and resealed the rubber drain plug underneath the spare tire well...
... - Its been a work in progress..and so far.. so good.. And we've had a lot of rain here in BC lately ...
-- I keep tabs on it...just ..because.. and Ive noticed that the musky damp odor is no longer there.. (and the spare tire rim is not getting rusty either..) so .. I keep at it ..
Hope this helps...

Latest – removed bumper screws, cleaned the square plugs and re-siliconed. –
That was on the 23March 2003.... No problems since..
I think that it was the bumper screws from the start.....but I didnt know that then.....
...sorry about the black print, its a copy from a Word Doc....
Hope you can read it ......................
