4WS - unique problem?

I have searched the forum and have found a lot of info on the 4WS systems... however it appears that I have a problem that has not been mentioned before (in my search).

My (2G) MX6 is a 96, 2.5L V6, Manual, 4WS. Originally sold at Parkland Mazda, Cannington, Western Australia.

I have had the occasional day where the 4WS light is on, and the system in not functioning. This has only happened once or twice, and appears to have gone away if I have the car parked for a while, or the following day. The last time this happened was about one year ago.

Now I have a stranger problem. The 4WS light is always on, the charge light is always on, and the brake light is 'half on' (changes brightness with the handbrake being pulled).

The rear wheels turn when the car is on and stationary (although 4WS light is on). While driving at low speeds, the rear wheels also turn. When accelerating around a corner, half way through, the rear wheels straighten out (feels like the back wheels ran over a kurb). The car is still under the 57kph threshold for 'switching rear steering direction'.

I carried out the 4WS diagnostics as found on this forum by shoring out the TWS and the GND, turning on the ignition, and observing the 4WS light. Its a miracle... the 4WS light turns off. There is no flashing... and therefore no useful code. I remove the diagnostics wire and the 4WS light is on again.

Any ideas on what to check next?

Alternately, does anyone know of a good Mazda service center (where they know what to look for on a MX6) in the Perth area? My regular mechanic is great... however the car electrics is not his strength.

Also, is there a way I can turn the 4WS system off in the meantime? I don't feel right driving it around while it does the rear jolt.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

I suggest you post in the Australia specific forum, as 99% of the American mx6 owners in the general sections do not have 4ws as it was never an option in the States.

I cant help you with your problem though, it does sound like it will be hard to track down. Post in the Aussie section, plenty of smart guys to help.
