Removing engine help

Is there any way to get the DE engine out without removing the wheels an axles? I have the car standing on ramps and I like it that way, I dont want to put it on jacks and then take axles off and all that. Is there a way the engine could be safelty angled out or can the transmission be somehow pushed aside?

Maybe, but a huge pain in the ass.. It would probably be easier to take them out.

I hate putting cars on jack stands, it just doesnt feel safe expecially when Im going to be lowing the engine back in and working under it. Can the axles be removed just from the differencial so I dont have to take the wheels off?

My opinion would be to remove the axles to make things easier.

Can I drop the transmission and then move it far enough down or back so that I can pop the halfshafts off at the differencial?

You're making things way too difficult. Just do it the normal way. If you can't do that find a real man and let him do it. People have used jackstands for years. Use common sense and you'll be fine.

You can unbolt the intermediate shaft from the back of the engine dropping the intermediate shaft out of the transmission.

You can also just pop the driver's side axle out of the transmission. If you have a hard enough time, you could unbolt the transmission from the engine instead.

I agree with the others in this thread though. You're making things too complicated.

I just did a motor swap with the thing on jack stands... they make em for a reason! unless both your A-arm's break at once, you should have nothing to worry about!

I got the engine out without taking off the axles. Took off intake, exhaust, heads, oil pan, power steering pump, water pump. Then there is enough space to slide the engine left out of the transaxle. Since the car was on ramps, we just lowered the engine down onto a trolly and pulled it out from the bottom. Everything was pretty simple and much easier then fighting around with axles.

Lol fair enough but I would have avoided taking the heads off and all that other stuff in favor of fighting the axels :P

I just took out my whole strut assembly with the axels and all connected (so I didn't fight against that blasted axel nut). Just had to pop em out the trans (which was a prick) and then take off the tie rod ends and some other small things. But that's about it.

You never told us why you needed to remove the engine. So why did it need to come out?

Long story-
Got this 93 from a guy for 200 dollars, he said a shop told him the head gasket was blown. We decided this was not hard to fix so we took off the heads and replaced the gasket. When we got everything back together it was acting exactly the same way as before(not idleing, have to be on throttle to keep running). Now we had a battery in it and we can start it up multiple times and see what was going on(before we pop-started it). We heard a knock comming from cylinder 1 so we did a compression test and all the cylinders where fine except 1 which was really low. We suspected a piston ring. We took the engine apart again and this time we noticed that at tdc piston 1 was not all the way up. We took out the piston and found the rod is bent. Well if we are going to replace the piston rings we might as well replace the rod bearings and main bearings and if we where going to do all that, it would be a good idea to get the milk out of the engine(when the head gasket went there was coolant leaking into the oil and that makes a disguesting milky substance). This is why we might as well get the engine out so it can be properly cleaned and re-assembled. Right now we have the engine completly disasembled and so far we only cleaned the block and crankshaft.
