Smell of Gas inside of car

Hi
Recently I've noticed the smell of gas from inside my car after I start it. I smell it too at times from outside, when my windows are down. Some days the smell is there some days not. I thought there is a leak and had my mechanic check it but when I brought it in the smell did not appear (perhaps I did not drive it long enough). He also did not notice any leaks. Each time I smell it it was regardless whether my tank is full or partially full.

Any suggestions what can be wrong? I've a 97 MX6 LS with 130K miles.

yes, stop farting :P

are you noticing any bad gas mileage? any exhaust leaks? or is it purely a gas/petrol smell like when you fill up at the station?

LOL damnit bmx! I was gonna say that!

Ya you're probably running rich there bud. My car smells like gas on the odd occasion too, not really like gas, but that smell from the exhaust when you know there's somethings big under the hood......which isn't the case unfortunately. I think it depends on what your climate control is set to, if you're allowing air to enter the vehicle from outside, then you might be smelling it then. That might be why it's random.....just food for thought.

Does your mx6 feel hesitant upon heavy acceleration? Usually cars with high-flow exhaust systems expel that rich gas smell. I dunno man, sounds like you're either running rich or you have an exhaust leak, I'd have your mechanic check the exhaust manifold gaskets for leaks.

I had the same problem for a bit. Turns out when I went for emissions testing to renew my tags, it failed the evap test . Food for thought as well. I took it to a shop because I didnt have the time or room to drop the tank, they found that the fuel line nearest the tank was leaking.

The shop working on my car replaced the gas cap and it fixed the problem.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. Will get the mech to check the fuel lines and the exhaust gasket. I realise that the smell gets worse after I make a left turn. Does this makes sense??? And lately my car has been really sluggish. The mech also found a misfire in #6. Not sure if these are related.

Ironically the smell of gas (not fart ) is only inside the car. It doesn't have any fuel smell outside. And this does not occur after I fill at the station. Any possibility for it to be the seal of the fuel injection going bad or other possibilites?

The gas cap is fine after checking it.

There is a breather tube attached to the gas tank on the left side of your trunk. Maybe something is wrong with that? How did you check the gas cap?

if you don't have any visible gas leaks on the ground. sounds like your evap/return line. start by changing your gas cap..

I may not be perfect, but I'm Canadian and thats close enough!!!!!!!!

maybe check your charcoal cannister, and the vacuum line that goes with it, too,
as this is used to store vapors and suck them into the intake manifold when the
car is running

Ahhhh someone did the good old "route the exhaust back into the hatch" trick.

J/k. But there's a fuel pump in the back seat, you can easily lift the back seat off, there's a couple buttons. Maybe something is leaking around there, if it smells more in the back of the car?

The other thing to check are the hard lines under the throttle body, bolted to the rear head.
Just found mine to be leaking (kinked) It wasn't making puddles, but damn was I getting high every time I went for a drive. I guess with the engine heat it was evaporating pretty fast, so it made it hard to find, plus it is sort of hidden.
