Ummm...isn't the stock airbox design pull directly from behind the grill? Seems the hole is right above the front bank of the motor....

No. Stock air box pulls from behind the hood right where the air scoop is. Ha! You think I'm trying to say its going to pull from there when it pulls from behind grill? I'll report back more results as they come in. After 2 fills I got 7.7 and 8.1 L/100 km.

.

The temp of the intake hoses were warm, and sometimes hot on warmer days prior to doing the hood scoop, and on cold winter days, I'd see the intake hoses cool as if it was doing its job normally with out the scoop, but with the scoop and it being warmer out, its all nice and cold all the way up to the TB wher it then warms up... none the less you get the idea. Even with the intake sitting on top of the rad (which I will eventually make an aluminum heat sink for) to keep it as cool and as dense as possible.

Best fuel economy is in the right foot and minimizing drag. Closed sunroof, minimal use of a/c etc. Holes in hood hurt resale value, but each to his/her own
yes holes hurt resale value, but in the moment they work. Nothing a little piece of aluminum behind the hole, body filler and fresh paint won't hurt. As you can see, the hood is pretty beat up paint wise, so bondo and fresh paint and she's as good as new.

As far as doing it stock... I would say out of convenience that Mazda didn't do this cause im sure the average owner didn't want to have to have some sort of button, or block off plate to install when it rained, or having it go through a car wash, or washing it your self. Its not pretty, but im sure i'll have another way to make it look a little nicer. This is only the first design... a second one will come thats more visually appealing, or is incorporated so that some sort of cap can just slide or be screwed on to the scoop.
