Smells of fuel

Hey. I have a 94 LS ATX (75k mi) and I've been noticing a very strong gas vapor smell when i start the car to warm up in the morning and also when pulling into my driveway and moving to the rear of the car. I've also apporximated an average of about 20 miles per gallon, which seems kind of low, even though I drive around my suburban town mostly.

Any suggestions as to what may be causing this or how I can attempt to fix it? Note that I'm a total newb to cars so be gentle with me

Thanks for the help.

well you only smell fuel when fuel is hitting the air (ie possibly dangerous)

to play it safe i would just get it leak-tested (they place a dye in your tank and run a UV light over the whole engine bay, under the car etc to see if its leaking anywhere.. gasoline leaks are otherwise pretty hard to locate (unless you see physical evidence) because a slow leak will likely evaporate before it drips.

but to get a better idea: WHERE do you smell gas?

under the hood? if so treat this as an emergency and have it taken care of. places to look include under the stock airbox where the fuel filter is connected... make sure the hoses aren't cracked, etc.

under the car/center? could be a clogged catalytic converter although thats usually accompanied with a rotten eggs smell.. but ive smelled just gasoline before when my o2's were bad (oxygen sensors) coming form the cat

behind the car - might be running rich and thats unburnt fuel exiting the exhaust.. again.. o2 sensors apossibility.. although burning fuel is often accompanied by smoke or hazy exhaust.

94 mx6 - you name it - I did it, came up with it, tried it and rejected it or just plain still have it. **Now in the caring hands of Chef**
93 mx3 - klze, i/h/e, rims and paint.. **FS - on a lift, has an engine, just need to put them together. I have no time. come buy it cheap.
