mechanical advance inside cam shaft makes clicking...serious??

Ok,

So I've got my car running again. But my mechanic, who I've worked with for a long time and has always been good to me, gave me a warning. He said that he heard a clicking noise coming from the engine and he and another mechanic there (these guys have been doing this for some 40 years) said that they believe there's "a mechanical advance inside the cam shaft."

He said that it could be quite major and that fixing it likely would not be worth the car. I've got 130k miles and I love my 94 V6... He also said that I should ask around amongst people that have worked more with Mazdas as he's not positive how serious it might be.

So that's what I'm doing. You guys always provide good advice and I didn't find a thread that specifically addressed this. I heard the sound myself and I'm sure I can reproduce it if you have questions.

Thanks for any help!

~Jared

most likely HLA noise or cam friction gear noise, neither of which are serious

Even if it's all the time? I can't hear it when my A/C is on (which is all the time these days) but it's def. noticeable with the hood off...

Hey, I hope it's nothing much!

Thanks for the response, JKM.

Hey, if they think the noise is comming from the cam shaft then upgrade it to a new one and get new cam gears. it is pretty expensive but it is worth it..i thik they have Fidanza gears n shaft for us, think u get a total of lik 4hp with the gears.

Thanks for the advice...I'm about to head out of town for a road trip (fingers-crossed), but I'll explore this more when I get back in 11 days...

Thanks!
