need info on ECUs

Im not too educated on ECUs and am wondering if anyone knows where i can find some info on them. Im looking for things such as id numbers, if possible to tell if the ecu is in working condition w/out a testing kit, just various things like that. if anyone knows more than me (which is not surprising), lmk. thankz
