I was thinking about this last night and thought maybe it's not the retailer's fault. I'm sure there's people out there that would buy the engine, take off parts they want and swap with other parts, then return the engine saying it doesn't work.
So my next plan of action is to go back to Japan Power, demand for either $400-450 that it'll cost for me to get ZE cams/heads, or get them to give me those parts. If they refuse, I'll go to the BBB and our major local paper.
So now that I have the IM off, is it a good idea to clean the inside of it, to get that crappy black grime off the inside of the runners? What bout the valve covers; should I clean the oil buildup off the inside of them? And what bout when I get down to the pistons -- same thing?
klo1 cams are just that,de cams. go to PT and search for klzeporsche, he measured the ze cams,de cams, and the alleged curved neck cams stamped 01 that people were saying were the same as ze...simply,they arent the same. you have a de block with a ze manifold. another thing you'll want to do if they dont take the motor back is either port the head intakes,or the pheon spacers,as it stands you have alot of turbulence between the manifold and heads, robbing you or some hp/tq. and,ze tb's are the same size as de tb's.
it was japan powers job to check and make sure thats a ZE. Honestly you have all the right to get your money back. One way or another that is a bad mark against that seller. Id check the dirt around the head and block for one. If they are different in dirtyness id say they did a head swap. If someone ran that engine like that you couldnt notice a difference. If that makes any sence. Also I had a japanese oil filter, coolant cap, plugs on the engine. Made me feel better before I took it apart to make sure it was real
OMG I'd be pissed. Take it back, or see if they'll give you another engine for free and let you keep that one, to cover the cost of labour for installation/removal. It was their fault for not checking what they were selling.
So I went back today, with printed pictures of the heads and all four cams with the stamps clearly visible, the KLZE FAQ thread with codes, and the Probetalk comparison chart Renboy posted.
The entire time, the guy said that in Japan, it is only called KL and apparently no one calls it KLZE; I told him that there is obviously a difference in horsepower, that is the whole reason I got the swap in the first place, and his reply is "Go put the car on dyno to see how much horsepower there is." WTF??! Moron! Anyways, he didn't have an answer for why their own website says they sell KLZE, why his associate told me it was a KLZE and why the rectangular intake manifold runners don't match with the oval head ports. He refused to give me KL31 parts, claiming that he sold me a KL and that's that. I told him I'm going to BBB, he didn't care.
So he's either really stupid or very aware of the scam and covering his butt. Needless to say, I'm pretty pissed and I'm clearly filing a claim with the BBB now, as my photo evidence does not lie. I've printed out the Japan Power webpage that clearly says they're selling a KLZE; nowhere does it only say KL. I think I'll send my story to the "Action Line" at The Ottawa Citizen too. I was hoping the guy was going to be arrogant enough to admit and say I can't do anything about it, cuz I tape-recorded the whole conversion without the guy knowing.
As for getting ZE cams and heads, I may just buy them off a member from here, then for my claim request monetary compensation, because since the Japan Power guys clearly aren't being cooperative, I don't trust that they would give me perfect condition parts if they're coerced to do so by the BBB (if I win my claim).
Can some of you guys post/send me pics of your KL31 cams and head stamps please so I have a evidence that it does exist? Pics of them on your car, both far shots that show the entire engine, then close ups (Like my pics above) would be ideal.
Thanks for all the input guys, and for helping me through this. I really appreciate it.
Head bolts - $100
Gasket set - $200
Loaded heads - ~$300
New (used) real ZE ~$850
I'd rather get the entire engine and have spare parts than just change the heads, and there's a warranty with an engine, whereas if you screw up the work installing new heads, that's your problem. Not to mention an engine swap is easier.
