Got in my car this morning started it up and 5-6 miles down the road check engine light came on and the car lost half its power, gettin codes 16 and 29. Would the egr cause it to lose power like that?
guess i should also note that i have an exhaust leak and vacuum leak as well but havent really had an effect on performance....maybe its just now catching up to me
"limp mode" is a term relating to transmission control. If there is a problem with the transmission, shift solenoids, torque converter lockup, low fluid level, etc. the transmission control module will lock the transmission into 2nd or 3rd gear and it wont shift out of that gear until the problem is fixed and the code is cleared. Just sayin...
I don't know off the top of my head what codes 16 and 29 mean. If I knew what the codes refer to, I could provide more information and advice. An exhaust leak will not cause codes of any kind. Vacuum lines will cause codes for long term fuel trim, short term fuel trim, or codes for the device that the vacuum line is hooked to such as egr or vris. The loss of power, if it is that evident, chances are something failed. Things like coil pack, plug wires, tps sensor, these things will cause a significant performance drop. Like I said, tell me what the codes mean and I can help more.
After driving the car around today I noticed the idle is funny, sometimes at 1500, sometimes at 500, and anywhere in between. I located the vacuum leak, there is a crack on the bottom of the hose that goes from the vaf to the throttle body (used some epoxy as a temp fix until i can locate a new one). Still the egr codes, I didn't think the egr would have an effect on performance. Could the tps go bad without throwing a cell?
If its a v6 then cleaning the egr out is a big job. Like, big job lol. Search on here for egr cleanout. There are some write ups and some pictures as well. From what I understand, the egr system on the v6 will affect performance. To what extent, I am not sure. But a lot of people do it so I imagine it is significant. If the vacuum line to the egr is good, then its time to do a cleanout.

alot of people do it to pass emissions test. alot of people block off the egr too, so i dont see how it can effect my performance that bad
another thing to add to the list, the car is now backfiring when i shift gears, its reallllllllly sluggish, i have to downshift to climb a hill........i feel a klze swap coming soon
Today i am one happy Mx6er. The cause for my loss of power was the timing being off badly. I bought a timing light this morning just to check it, and what do you know, the mark was so far past 10 it was off the dial, set it back to 10* and now she runs like a scalded dog. Was so happy i woke the neighbors up with my screaming. Now to clean my egr and replace the solenoids to get rid of that annoying check engine light. Thanks for the replies. Happy 6'ing to everyone.
