Use a degreaser like Simple Green to clean the surface area before applying dynomat on to it. Some people prefer to use a heat gun and a wallpaper roller to actually lay the material on. The adhesive can be messy stuff should you need to pull it off to reposition it. In certain areas, I used two layers of dynamat because I wanted to stop the rattling in the rear panel.

On a related note, Lexus uses dynomat to reduce road noise. It’s therefore decent quality stuff. But there are cheaper alternatives like “Ice Guard” which is a product used by roofing contractors. Expanding spray foams are also useful for getting into tight areas such as under the rear panel in the trunk.
