New to 626's
Yo!!! I just acquired a decent 1986 626 gt with a 2.0 turbo engine. I'm loving it other than some small glitches keeping me out of the driver seat. Where can I learn more about this car. The 626 specific forums aren't a whole lot of help. This one seems to have a little life left in it. Any good links would be appreciated. This is such a cool little car, and it sure seems that the 120hp rating was a conservative one. What's the curb weight on this thing? Anyone do a decent build on one of these? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

HAHA, you actually answered a question over there for me earlier. I can't seem to log back on to that site so I decided to try this one. Do you have any links to your rides, I'd like to check them out. My first project is probably going to be a cone filter, but I'm not sure the best way to go about it on this car. Is there some sort of adapter I need to get to attach one? I haven't pulled the air box apart and checked it out, I was just told it wasn't a direct fit type of situation. Know any links to any good information, I can't search over there because they won't allow a search for numbers only or words under four characters. So searching for 626 gt is not allowed.

Here's how to get around the search problem on 626.net: go to Google, advanced search, and specify the 626.net site as the domain name in a restricted search (copy and paste the 626.net address into the bottom line in Google advanced search). Then you get around the restriction on number of letters.

Here's what mine looks like. There has been some undesirable stuff done to it by the previous owner, such as there was a wing, horrible paint job, front bumper removal and fog light installation, the dash pad is tore up, and they installed a stereo without the dash kit. Its some pretty moronic stuff. There's absolutely no rust and it only has 86,000 miles. Here's some crappy pics.

Ahh, I can tell by the picture yours is the multi point version (different intake manifold and different air box) with the vane type air flow meter.
Hard to say why the US got that version, when other places got the same one as mine...I dont know what they got in Europe. I know that the central fuel injection (like mine) was available on GCs in Japan back when it was released in 1983, the turbo option was available (non intercooled) I think in 84. Here in Australia we didnt get the turbo version until the GC II in 1985, ours was non intercooled also. Maybe Mazda made the Multipoint one specifically for the US market purely due to california emission regulations. as for what modifications you can do....probably an intercooler would be a good start. I dont know how much boost increase you could do without running out of fuel, I guess you could lift it a few psi and see, get a wideband first. Other members who have worked on this version of the motor may know more. good to see another coupe running around, I miss mine (I know they didnt come in black, what colour was it originally ?) |

I can say that in the UK, we got engine options of 1.6 and 2.0 carburettor, later models became available with fuel injection. None of them had turbo's.
Later GD's got a 1.8 or 2.0 and also a 12V 2.0, GT's got the 16V DOHC again no turbo version.. GE's had 1.8, 2.0 and 2.5V6 the only 626 with a turbo, was the GE Comprex, with a turbo diesel. John |

Welcome to the gc information hunt. you have a couple of options for this car if you wish to keep the engine thats in place. standalone or vaf hac is in order. there is no chip available for your ecu so i would start with what you mentioned above. do a cone filter and get rid of the airbox, get a boost gauge, and most importantly get a front mount intercooler of anykind. i just started helping my buddy with his so i'll keep you updated.
